whoever said seven inches wasn't enough...

here's a couple more super-sexxxy-exclusive 7" tracks for y'all:

"Gem" by Zoot Woman - this is yet another example of American record labels being fucking retards, because nothing Zoot Woman has put out has been released domestically. this 7" was the first single from their second, self titled, album, that came out last year - all of the songs from it that i've heard are amazing dance/pop, as are the songs from their first album Living in a Magazine, due in no small part to the bassist being the man behind another great retro-pop project, Les Rhythmes Digitales.

and

"Make It Good To Me" by Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings - oh, sweet sweet soul music... like the first time, this song still breaks my heart every time i hear it - it sounds like it was made in 1968 or so, but the Dap Kings are none other than the Daptone records house band, a brooklyn outfit that's been making killer funk and sweet soul for a few years - this song is the B-side from the 2001 "Casella Walk" 7" - highly reccomended.

******** plus an extra special sexxxy bonus track ********
"Heads High" by Mr. Vegas - nasty hot new-era Greensleeves reggae/dancehall track... play this one in a club and watch the heads turn, nod in recognition, and the asses start shaking! Bam!

Ah, Sharon Jones! She's excellent--I've been meaning to post her version of Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done For Me Lately" at some point.

If you live in the NYC area...and I believe you do...you ought to try to check her out live, as I believe she performs around there fairly often. It is a show you will not forget. Last summer I had a chance to see her perform with Lee Fields and the Sugarmen 3...this was my report:

"We stood right up at the front of the stage for the first set; Fields somehow found Molls in the shadows off to the corner and proceeded to make hot love to her with his eyes every time he sang a ballad. This provoked jealous, violence-promising stares from the other women up there, and we eventually moved to the back just to keep the peace. Later on, Miss Jones climbed atop the Hammond organ and showed us how to do the Pony and the Dap-Dip. Overall the show was indeed a hot buttery slice of pure soul excitement--plump in the rump and no ingredients wasted."

My one fleeting moment of fame came when the head of Daptone records (and one of the sugarman 3) called me to talk about my demo tape and said he really liked it. The tape was even playing in the background.

*sigh*

Oh, but that Zoot Woman is the shit. Nice piston beats and great guitar lines. Dig.
