digging for the duck
I had a pretty solid dig at the Chelsea flea market this weekend, and came away with a few classics:
Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots - Disco Duck II (Instrumental)
this is the b-side to the 7" of the kooky radio DJ's one-off hit Disco Duck, the slightly more drawn out, rediculously funky instrumental, sans all those twerpy vocals that make you wince. it doesn't carry a particularly timeless sound, however it's dripping with funk, and was a pretty impressive feat to get together when it was recorded I guess. goofy.
while the rest of the tracks her her album the Wanderer are so-so, this Giorgio Moroder produced track is a particularly choice, and has more of the spacey future disco sound the man behind the moustache is so damn good at. it's a very echo-y, hauntingly darkish track that showcases how well Donna's vocals and Moroder's production can complement each other.
Outkast / Harold Faltermeyer - Skew it on the Bar-B / Alex F
the credit for this idea goes to my buddy Shin Shimosawa, who originally I bought my Vestax mixer from on eBay, and who's become a DJ penpal of sorts (we send each other mixes and hip-hop news). he's an LA-based DJ, and goes by his name when he plays out; if you ever see his name on a flyer on the left coast I'd hit his party up. he can mix with the best of them. at any rate, this is a mash-up of Outkast's vocals over the Axel F track, which I could finally record after picking up the Bev Hills cop soundtrack for a buck yesterday.
