trunk fulla amps motherfucka

the best band that never made it in the 90's:

Self - What a Fool Believes

yes, it's a cover of a Doobie Brothers song. but that's beside the point. Self is a pair of brothers from Tennessee who pride themselves on making all their own samples. they don't dig, they create. they know the sound they need for their production, but in addition to studio instruments they'll often run around recording stuff falling off of other stuff or beating up old computers until they get the sound they want. they've put out four albums with a 5th hung up for ages, and this track comes from the 4th, Gizmodgery [buy it] which was recorded entirely using toy instruments. all the drums, guitars, toy cell phone noises, bleeps, thumps, and even the sequencer they used were all bought at Toys R Us. there's a complete list on the back of the CD.

they've got a great Eels/TMBG/geek pop sound, and cute songs about how if they were dating Meg Ryan they'd be all full of themselves and about their old tee shirts. it's harmless music, but it's utterly charming and catchy as hell.

plus toy instruments?!

I love self! On their first cd, they had an excellent song called "cannon" that got some air time in my local city for some reason. I fell in love with that song, bought the CD, and then bought all the CDs after that. Only, I think they got progressively less interesting, and in the end they started reminding me of Smash Mouth and TMBG in a bad way. Their first CD, I think, is their most fantastic...hear it if you ever pass by it. Self has also appeared on a few movie soundtracks, including Dead Man on Campus (with the Zach Morris guy!) and Shrek. Thanks for having this song :D

Good call on the best band of the 90s that never made it. This guy is hella talented (and seems pretty full of himself). You can get most of his tracks at the website. Not sure what it is. He made a record called "Feels Like Breakin' Shit" that is available only on the internet and has a cover of "Gigantic" called "Titanic" with a different lyric.

I've always loved Self's cover of WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES. It made me realize what a great songwriter Michael McDonald was. Toy instruments = so best.
