This film is on

When The Best of R.E.M. came out last year, it was met with the periodic praise of R.E.M. that only comes when there's a new album, and all the press went something like this: "Bill Berry left the band in the late '90s but some people still like R.E.M.! Remember when 'Automatic For the People' came out?" The truth is, I still love R.E.M., especially their new albums. They're still a great live band, too, as this track - a live version of Country Feedback - will attest to. Peter Buck channels Neil Young there at the end, and everyone's hypnotized.
According to the liner notes of Best Of (whose bonus disc this song comes from, and which you can buy here), the song popped up as one of the most requested songs to play live in 2003, which Buck called "gratifying, but perplexing." See for yourself.

that's my favorite REM track. So good.

And I agree-- they've made some good music these past few years. Some of the stuff on Up was just beautiful, and even their last one had some great tracks on it.

I just picked up this weird indie-rock tribute to early REM called "Surprise Your Pig." It's super weird. Vic Chesnutt has a kind of interesting take on "End of the World", and JawBox does some things with "Low" that are pretty neat, but otherwise it's not that cool. Plus it's on cassette so the sound is super muddy.
