DJ Dangermouse & Gemini - What You Sittin' On?

Dangermouse has earned all that insane recognition for the Grey Album in the past few months, but in addition to pissing off major labels with groundbreaking concept/mash-up albums, he's also one hell of a producer. he teamed up with BK emcee Gemini and released Ghetto Pop Life on Lex, representing a solid crossover between a more party rap-centered emcee style and solid indie-sounding production. plus the cover art by Ehquestionmark is unreal (as per normal). the final track in my previously posted minimix is also from this LP, and is probably my favorite. this track takes a slightly different approach, but gives an accurate flavor of what the album is like; boasty, bouncy lyrics on top of catchy beats that straddle the line between made-for-radio rap production and the indie label sound. the album's name is entirely accurate: it's ghetto and it's pop. but it's good. [buy it]

yes! the ghetto pop life record was so great, and so overlooked (compared to the grey album - mediocre at best, just hyped up cause of what it was).

also worth checking out is dangermouse's instrumental project called "Pelican City" - which was just re-released this year i believe (from around '96 i think)..melancholy downtempo beats and breaks - beautiful stuff. he's a pretty eclectic dude, his favorite band of all time is apparently Goldfrapp and last time I saw him he was wearing a Maserati T-Shirt (instrumental rock band) Go figure.
