it's the bonus round!

partially because one of the songs was requested, and mostly just for the heck of it. please note - the following four tracks were taken from a mixed CD I made, so if you arrange them in this order on your playlist they'll flow right into each other. neat!

Basement Jaxx - Bongoloid

it makes no sense to me that the best track recorded sometime around the Rooty sessions never made it onto the LP. Bongoloid can be found on the Romeo single (either CD or 12") [buy it], and is the most gritty, nasty, groin-tickling, teeth-grinding dance track I've ever heard. it's that goddamn bass. it'll blow your speakers if you have crappy ones and it'll put you in heaven if you have decent ones (don't even both listening on laptop/PC speakers or minibuds, the frequencies are well below the response range). but once you've heard it on an 800W system, you'll want to get up and throw yourself around to this song each time you hear it. it's damn near a perfect club track.

Prince - Uptown (ARC000 remix)

this is the aforementioned Prince remix from the Arc single. what can I say? it's killer. bouncy, jazzy remix work keeps the classic alive, and even though it lacks real variation througout a fairly long track, it's so catchy that you won't even notice.

Demon vs. Heartbreaker - You are my High

I think I remember blair posting this earlier, but the song is so damn good and such a house classic by this point that it's worth giving folks a second shot at. owning it is a must, your best bet is to try and find it on Gemm.com [buy it].

Royksopp - Remind Me (Ernest St. Laurent remix)

From Royksopp's incredible Melody A.M., this song's original and video are breathtaking. the remix does it justice as well, and can be found on the single release or CD2 of the CD release [buy it]. Royksopp's album is a must-own, and is at the very least worth a listen [give it a shot].

enjoy!

ha! i hadn't posted YAMH but i was planning on it - it is the best french/disco-house song, period. this is another one that deserves a very loud sound system so you hear the bassline... nice work

"You Are My High" is one of my favorite ever house tracks. So good. French disco-house just rules the school, as they used to say.

I remember hearing the sample :

"White, black, Puerto Rican /
Everybody just a-freakin'"

In like 1997 in a house track on Terry Mullen's "New School Fusion Volume 1" and wondered where it was from.

When I heard the Prince track, I understood exactly what he meant. And why the house producer sampled it.

I maintain that if someone does not appreciate Prince, they really don't like music. There's so much of it, and so much is soooo excellent.

nice Basement Jaxx. OK, what record expert can answer this first? There was a Basement Jaxx track from a while back that sampled the Grateful Dead's bassline off Shakedown Street. I thought it was out around Rooty but might have been earlier.. any help?

You can also get a single edit of "You Are My High" (GORGEOUS song) on the My House in Montmartre compilation. That whole comp is sort of essential if you're into the French/ Filtered Disco sound. Amazon has it here (one copy left! according to the site)

Yeah, that My House in Montmartre is a pretty hot frenchdiscohouse comp, as is the Paris Is Sleeping Respect Is Burning series. (And probably lots of others that I slept on.) Damn, now I can't wait to get home and put my various versions of "Music Sounds Better With You" on the stereo....
