Why Ain't There a Funeral?

Grievous Angel

Beck + Emmylou Harris - Sin City

What better way to start off your Friday than with Beck kicking back on some Flying Burrito Brothers. Hearing this song was one of the first times I thought "Gosh darn, Beck can sing." Off of the absolutely excellent Return of the Grievous Angel [Buy It] tribute to Gram Parsons, this is one of the standout tracks. I have a few Parsons albums, and I feel like he just wasn't that good at singing. It took a few years and some different voices to really find the right arrangements.

Evan Dando + Juliana Hatfield - $1,000 Wedding. Poor Evan Dando. His only truly good songs are ones he didn't write. It's such a shame. I think my favorite song of his is "Outdoor Life", which was written by that Australian guy (whose name I can never remember). Anyway, this song is beautiful and sad and mellow and pretty, and exactly what my tired little head needs today.

Ooh, nice post. This is one of the best tribute albums I've ever heard, and these two tracks are really good examples of why. Also check out Lucinda Williams (with David Crosby croaking in the background) doing "Return of the Grievous Angel". Buy this now.

Man, I love Evan Dando when he's working with Juliana. They were quite the musical team - giving us the most excellent It's A Shame About Ray. Dando hasn't done anything that compares since. Although this is a great track and I hadn't heard it before.

Thanks!!
