Battlestations - DJ Lofton vs. DJ Leisure

Battlestations was a west coast mixtape released around 1997/98, that came to my friend Katie Wyatt via her brother Kevin, who plays around the LA area. it's a comprehensive, clean mix, that plays classic hooks off each other (like Erika Badu's "on & on" against the Beastie Boys own "on & on" and so on, and on). this track is one of the more mellow ones from the CD, working with Dawn Penn's fantastic "No no no" dubplate, Portishead, and the Badu vocals throughout.

the rest of the CD is fantastic as well, but there's little chance of finding it at any music stores near you. check bootleg/mixtape sites, Gemm, or west coast hip-hop shops and you might get lucky. here's some info and a cover shot in case it helps.

holy shit JP! I'm so glad you posted this! I got a tape copy of this mix from Kevin Wyatt way back in the day and it was for years my summer soundtrack. I dubbed it on tape for quite a few friends. Unfortunately, I had never written down the tracklisting and by the next year I didn't even know the DJ's names.

Even more unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced the tape. :( I went to look for it this summer and I can't find the darn thing anywhere. So thanks for posting this one track today. It makes me smile on a hot hot summer day. :)

mark - I played this for you when we were driving back from Burlington (the night I slept in the closet for lack of bed).

perhaps I'll post another track or two this week if it's that hard to find...
