Flirt With a Waitress in Sioux St. Marie

Down at the Khyber

Joel Plaskett Emergency - Light of the Moon. I grew up in New England, but now I live in Southern California. Things here are wonderful, but I'm sure that when autumn rolls around I'm going to get a little homesick for cool weather and change. A song like this just might help me out a little bit. This song is perfect for driving home on a late night in October, with cool breezes and dusty leaves in the road, when the moon's so bright you can turn your headlights off and see just fine. It feels echoed and live, with a wonderful sense of comraderie between bandmates. I also love the ever-so-mild freakout solo towards the end.

Joel Plaskett used to be the frontman for a Halifax-based band called Thrush Hermit. They had a deal with Elektra, but I'm not really sure what happened. Perhaps some of our readership from the Great White North can help us out. Plaskett's been solo for a few years now, and you can buy most of his product on his website (you should really go through him directly, as his stuff is always out of stock on Amazon). This particular track is from Down at the Khyber, which comes in either CD or gorgeous LP format -- both of which are available on his site.

on first listen, i said "sweet jesus that song is awesome," and that was before it got to the rock-out half-way point!
man, i'm gonna have to listen to that song in the fall, and think about driving around the back-roads in maine, instead of walking to and from the subway like usual...

Thrush Hermit were a pretty decent dirtier version of Sloan (dirty=less polished/poppy, not like ODB), think a less heavy Hardship Post. Their song "Great Pacific Ocean" is one of those ones I am always on the lookout for ("and all your time in junior high, smoking grass and getting high, listening to your favourite records, by the pistols and the Clash"). I don't know exactly what happened, by they broke up like all Canadian bands with a single well-played video do (a la The Superfriendz, Eric's Trip, SIANspheric (they got back together)). The song sounds good, by the way.

A great song from a great band (it's Sault Ste. Marie, though). And while Thrush Hermit is no more, Plaskett still plays a song or two from the old days in his awesome live sets.

You should come up to Halifax. The exchange rate is great and Joel is usually playing at a bar somewhere in the city. We've got pretty thriving hip-hop and dance scenes here as well as the indie scene. Check out Skratch Bastard's 'Blazin'.

Sault Ste. Marie? What are you talking about?

Wow. This is just great.

Sault St. Marie is a city in Michigan and in Canada. They are famous for the Sault Locks, which control the water level in the channel connecting Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

Sault is pronounced just like Sioux.
