It's Time For a Hanging, So Don't Stop Running

Mixtape Swap

The Mae-Shi - Mixtape Track 3

The Mae-Shi - Mixtape Track 8.

The Mae Shi are getting a lot of press these days, and it seems their guerilla promotion techniques are paying off. Matthew posted them yesterday, and pitchfork reviewed their album, Terrorbird [Buy It].

These are tracks from the band's absolutely manic mixtape album. Last year the band threw a Mixtape Swap, where you bring a mixtape for the band to listen to while they head out on tour. They took their favorite parts from all of the mixes and slapped them together ADD-style on this crazy, intense 49-track radio dial seizure. It's insane. These are just two of the tracks, and they're all like this. It's nuts. It's like a mix the Avalanches would make without the subtlety, or a mixer. It's hilarious and I think I love it.

Tonight they're hosting the second annual Mixtape Swap at the Echo here in Los Angeles (Silverlake). I'll probably go drop off a piping hot music.for-robots mix with them, since they were nice enough to furnish us with theirs. If you give them a mix tonight, they'll give you a copy of this crazy one that they made. Get it? Swap? Get it?

By the way, their album is really really good. For fans of "art punk" (whatever that is). I hate to make a comparison, but it sounds like Les Savy Fav, or the more manic side of the Dismemberment Plan. But it's definitely it's own thing, with all sorts of fun stuff crammed into 33 tracks. Worth your money for sure.

Have a good Friday.
