Too Dumb to Follow A Moving Target

Extra Glenns

The Extra Glenns - Marrakesh. Last night I received a promo record from Berkeley's Absolutely Kosher Records called No Tsuris. This record comes free when you join their mailing list, which is a wonderful promotional idea. So here are some tracks from that album. If you hadn't heard the Extra Glenns before you should have. It's John Darnielle from the Mountain Goats unmistakably singing, and it's got the same tape-hiss production that you're used to. The sound is a little harder and harsher than the Goats work, but it's a nice little one-off album nonetheless. This can be found on their album, Martial Arts Weekend. [Buy It]

Offcell

Pinback - B Good old pinback. Never one to let you down (although I hear that the new album isn't so hot). This is from the Offcell EP [Buy It] that came out a few years ago. It's got a similar sound to early Modest Mouse. If you ever asked yourself "Hey, I wonder what Jimmy Eat World would sound like if they were really good", the answer is basically pinback. It's melodic, twisty indie rock with solid vocals.

The Hidden Cameras - Builds the Bone. This is allegedly from the Camera's upcoming limited edition 10" called The Arms of His "Ill", but I can't find any info on that for the life of me. It is also found on the recently Canadian-issued Mississauga Goddam album, which should be out in the states on September 14th. This is a wonderful, quiet song with great echoed, double-tracked vocals. It sounds great on this gray morning, just before the clouds burn off. You can buy their older albums, which are all excellent, direct from the band [Buy 'Em].

also in the Extra Glenns is vastly underrated songster Franklin Bruno--he of many a solo album on Shrimper and Simple Machines and of the fabulously overly intellectual indie rock band Nothing Painted Blue.

For those who enjoy the Mtn. Goats, definitely worth looking in to Mr. Bruno's various works. Might I suggest starting with the song "Another Child Bride" from the Working Holiday compilation (http://www.simplemachines.net/whol.html)

fwiw, Offcell came out in June '03, so not exactly "a few years ago" quite yet...
