I can't stand waiting on you...

obscurica triple-shot to chase away your monday blues:

this is the wong image, damn it!

"High Society Girl (Long Dub Version)" by Laid Back -- the Danish duo Laid Back is best known today for their popular single "White Horse" (originally a B-side), which was reissued a couple years back on the awesome Disco Not Disco 2 compilation, but today i'm bringing you this lesser known single (this is from the German label Metronome) from their Keep Smilling album - it is, simply put, perfect synth-pop. worth noting, on their site there's news of a new album coming this fall. you can (try to) get their greatest hits here.

gazzzzz!

"I. C. Love Affair (Chinese Version)" by Gaz Nevada
italodisco to da maxxx! - Gaz's bigger hit, "Special Agent Man" gets name checked by italo-heads, but this slower funk jam has more ill synths than you can shake a stick at. i can imagine a room full of people wearing suits, skinny ties and white shoes dancing extra freaky to this. good luck finding much by these guys, at least in this country (i'm not picking obscure things to stump anyone here, i just like opening up the rare-record vault), but this certainly strikes my fancy, and maybe it will appeal to some of you too.

liquid!

"Bell Head (Harvey's Liquid Head Re-Edit)" by Liquid Liquid -- Liquid Liquid was a prominent part of the new york 80s post-punk/no-wave scene alongside other bands like Konk, Gang of Four, and ESG (they were their label-mates on 99 Records). all their singles were reissued by MoWax in 1997 on CD, and this remix single came in 1998, wherein Harvey does a classic re-work (taking the original song and adding elements or stretching it out, as opposed to a full-fledged remix, where the original multi-track recording is dissected) of stripped-down poly-rhythmic funk. here's the re-issue album on amazon... though you might be better served looking elsewhere, as the used price is hefty (original LL records, if you can actually find them, go for incredible prices as they are serious collectors items).

Like it! If this is going to become a regularity for a Monday morning, I must start bringing my eyeliner in to work. Is the Disco (Not Disco)2 comp worth getting? I always thought it looked a bit inferior to the first one (now sadly out of print). Here's a recommendation though: New Religion - A Secret History (http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?merchID=14434) which I picked up at Soul Jazz's record shop in London. Excellent early eighties electronic dance.

Heh, High Society Girl sounds like it should on the soundtrack to an 80s teen movie, where the boy from the wrong sound of the tracks is in love with a rich girl and everyone tells him "She's out of your league man!", but somehow he persuades her to go out on a date with him.

Disco Not Disco is definitely worth picking up. If for no other reason than to hear the original "uncensored" version of White Horse that used to thrill the hell out of me when I was a kid.

And, hey, I thought Laid Back were German?

Laid Back's White Horse was always such a great tune, all that clicking and grooving, and so wicked that it was rumored to be about what, cocaine? Anyway, riding it all the way, thanks for the tunage!

rk - from the biography on their old site:
Right from the beginning it was obvious that John and Tim were doing something different from the rest of the bands on the Danish music scene - not only were they playing pop while everyone else was playing punk and new wave, singing in English while most of the other bands were working with Danish lyrics, but most importantly were amond the first bands to be playing and experimenting with electronic music.

who knew the 1980 music scene in denmark was so cool?

there's also a great compilation called 80's Precious Little Diamonds that has some good stuff from Boytronic, Vicious Pink and The Creatures.
