The Heart Is A Risky Fuel to Burn

swearing at motorists

Swearing at Motorists - Being in Love. This is a live version of the Songs: Ohia song, recorded outside during a rainstorm in Amsterdam. Now, the original is a decent little track, but I much prefer this version as the singer clearly means the words. It's so intense, and while he's off-key at times, there's something very sad and passionate about it.

This track was only available for a brief time at the Swearing At Motorists site. They often host live and unreleased tracks, sometimes having whole concerts, so it's worth checking out.

Richard Buckner

Richard Buckner - Lucky Buzz. This is from Buckner's Live at Schuba's Tavern EP, which is no longer in print. The song originally can be found on his Since album [Buy It], which was when he went all electric and rockin'. This version is excellent, with pedal steel accompaniment and no percussion. It's really Buckner's voice that's the attraction. You believe every word he says. If you're having one of those really sad drunken nights you can put this song on and feel even worse.

You can now hear one of his songs play during a Volkswagen commercial. I almost shit when I saw it last night. Almost as crazy at the commercial that uses Spoon.

Dntel/Styrofoam Split

Dntel - Don't Get Your Hopes Up. This was mentioned in the comments yesterday so I figured I'd post it. It comes off an out-of-print 7" picture disc that was a split with Styrofoam. Meredith Figurine is on vocals, and this is just a wonderful Dntel track. It's better than most of his stuff with Figurine, and probably better than a lot of his album work. Definitely worth checking out. Wish I could point you to where to buy it, but it's just not around. Gemm.com has a few copies, but they're pricey. Maybe take your chances on eBay.

Comments

Thank you very much for posting this incredibly hard to find track of Dntel's. It reminds me mostly of his work as The Postal Service with Ben Gibbard, mostly due to the orchestral strings and horns that surge into the song.

Also, the link isn't working... :(

Should work now Rob. Sorry 'bout that.

It still isn't working. Works when ".mp3" is added to the end of the address.

Sorry, it works, seems we posted at the exact same time:-)

Not to sound like a cock now Robert, but the mp3 isn't the whole song... it cuts out horrendously in the middle of the second verse. :\ please excuse my assholeness.

Ok, Shit should be totally settled now. I uploaded the track again. Things should be working just fine. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Once again, I give you great thanks. I know your job isn't easy, so I will start worshipping you now, Wayne's World style.

Long live Richard Buckner! I love Since. Great stuff, Mark.

Gotta say, I don't understand why you prefer this version of "Being in Love" over the original... I think I hear the "sad" you're talking about, but for me it mostly comes from the big empty sound of a live recording, all that muffle and hiss and echo. A man alone in a big room. The singer reminds me of this over-earnest anthropology student I know, who always wears sweaters, and keeps his dreds in a tea-cosy hat. He cried at "Spider-Man," mouths along to Hayden songs, eyes-closed.

The Dntel is fantastic, though. And I like the Buckner a lot as well.

I don't know sean, the songs: ohia version just seems kind of boring to me. The dry drum machine, the weak singing. And it's long, like six minutes or something. I think the guy from S@M gets to the heart of the lyrics. The key line is "I am proof that the heart is a risky fuel to burn", and he makes it seem much more poignant than Songs:Ohia.

But that's just one man's opinion.

Just a tip about Richard Buckner, who I love...I've had the pleasure of seeing him a few times in Northampton, MA. Great live show. Buckner fans may be interested to know that he is one of 20 musicians who contributed to an indie lit meets indie music book/CD package called ISN'T IT ROMANTIC: 100 Love Poems by 100 Younger American Poets (with Audio CD of Love songs), coming out this fall from the indie publisher Verse Press (http://www.versepress.org). Valentine's Day 2005 there will be 6 simultaneous parties/shows for the book/CD release and Buckner will most likely play at one of the events (NYC, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, LA...i think i got that city list right but check versepress.org in a few months when the lineup is posted for each city.) The other musicians on the CD include Vic Chestnut, Hamell on Trial, Doug Martsch (Built to Spill), Silver Jews, Jason Molina (Magnolia Electric Co.) and others.

Love, love, love that Dntel song. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for Hopes... Besides I like Dntel, this track uses a nice sample of Depeche Mode's "But Not Tonight". Reminds me of my school days. Thanks again, Mark.

Incidentally, I have been caning the s@m track from here for a few days now.

I haven't heard the original songs:ohia track, but in my book 3 minute songs regularly defeat 6 minute songs. I agree about him nailing the vocal performance on the hook.
