drugs are so cool!

so last night i watched Trainspotting with a friend of mine and was reminded not only how awesome the movie is (i hadn't seen it in at least a couple of years), but how amazing the soundtrack was. i was introduced to these two groups because of it:

texty!

"Dark + Long, [Dark Train]" by Underworld -- the bigger hit from this period was "born slippy" but i think "dark & long" is a better song (this is the song that plays whilst our young hero, Renton is getting off smack and freaking out in his bedroom). re: underworld, talk about prolific - these guys have the longest discogs.com page i've seen - underworld have always been more than just techno or house music, and this song, originally from 1994, is a great example of their expansive, cinematic style. if you like this song and don't have much of underworld's output, i'd highly suggest buying their greatest hits because its got all the best hits on there. or get the single for born slippy (which this came off of), or the album the song comes from (the opening cut no less!) dubnobasswithmyheadman, considered by many to be one of the best dance albums ever made.

freaky!

"Original" by Leftfield -- the song by leftfield that appears in trainspotting was called "a final hit" - its the scene where Renton is having a final hit before quitting heroin - that song was written for the film, but i decided to put this up instead because its a classic of mid-90s electronic music. this is when i was discovering all this music that i'd never heard before, and i have trainspotting (and doing college radio) to thank for it. 'Original' is a slow burner, like acid techno at half-speed - leftfield have since had their music in another film, Go!, which fit the mood very well there too. pick up the album, Leftism here for very little money - its worth it because they cover a good variety of styles, from downtempo stuff like this, to bouncy-acid-bass dance songs.

I think these are BOTH great.

Dubnobasswithmyheadman is tragically underrated i think. it's the best underworld have come up with, and anyone who says Second Toughest In the Infants is better should put on a dunce hat and sit in the corner for two hours until they can say they're sorry. If you want a song that expresses all the joys of electronic dance music, you only have to listen to Cowgirl. Drugs might be cool - but listen to that song and they're totally not needed.

I love Underworld, but my problem with them stems from the fact that they can never seem to put it together for an entire album.

Take their last one for instance, the first two tracks are outstanding, but it kind of falls off from there, I mean that one where he sings "Woman in a box/with her head in a box/speaks french when spoken/like a tourist/french"? That's terrible.

For me, the aforementioned Born Slippy is probably their best release, as the remixes of Born Slippy are pretty great, for the most part, and this song here is amazing.

What can I say about this legendary electronic bands!!

All said, both are thumbs up!!

Underworld kicks much ass, for a real treat check out their live DVD, Everything Everything. You'll be impressed that a electronic band can put on such a show. And in Dolby Surround it sounds excellent!

Caley, you're full of it. Born Slippy (Nuxx), their best? Hell no. How about Cowgirl/Rez? Cups? Spikee? Pearl's Girl? And since when were we supposed to judge the supposed lyrics of their songs anyway? None of them make any sense, so I can't see how one is more lyrically strong than the other. Born Slippy (Nuxx) is overrated anyway. Bring on the original!

Also, I found "A Hundred Days Off" to be much more solid than "Beaucoup Fish."

by the way, Danny Howells got on the bootleg action and made a breaks version of "Dark Train" late last year if I recall. DJ James Zabiela uses it on his "Four" mixCD set (disc 4 of 4). You can find it on the net, but it has the other bits of the mix in it cos people just ripped it straight off the CD, lol

Underworld is so deeply rooted in dance music and the only reason for their alternative following in because of that movie "Trainspotting". Just reading these comments makes it easy to spot out the people that like to get down and the ones that like the quiet comfort of their livingroom/bedrooms.

Why are you bedroom people rating music you don't normally listen to?! i.e. Rob just liking Dark&Long !

I liked "A Hundred Days Off" more than "Beaucoup Fish" also...

First I'd like to say, great site.

Just some comments:
1. Another amazing Movie soundtrack, and some would argue a more definitive sdtk. for this genre of music, would be Hackers (1995), which IMHO includes the Underworld's best track, Cowgirl. (I think someone else mentioned Cowgirl in an earlier comment. I'd also agree.)
2. Original is a great Leftfield track, but I must point out props to Toni Holiday from Curve for floatin' her sweet pipes on the vocal tracks.

o the nostalgia. No need to download the tracks, since I already have. It is funny to see people arguing over the merits of the albums. I'd say that Underworld has over the years gotten less "dirty" for lack of a better term and more streamlined and bedroom-ish. Underworld however are much much better live, so it's sort of odd to talk about albums. I definitely have preferred tracks, but it's the best when they mush and mix them together into one glorious mess for a concert. Well that and you get to see Mssr. Hyde humping the amps. Quite an experience.

good point, Jae. their live DVD/CD "Everything, Everything" is so SICK it's ridiculous.

Titleing a post about trainspotting, 'drugs are so cool'is the lamest thing I can remember seeing for about five years.

commenting on a title's lameness when it is a joke is the lamest thing I can remember seeing for about five years.
