Portions (For Robots)

Rilo Kiley

Man, I love Rilo Kiley. Not only do I have a huge crush on its lead singer and songwriter Jenny Lewis, I have a huge crush on their songs, which are catchy as hell and just very good songs. I loved everything about their last album, The Execution of All Things, and their newest, More Adventurous (buy here) is pretty damn good, too. (My favorite off Execution is definitely With Arms Outstretched.) The song Portions For Foxes is the "big single" and the catchiest song from More Adventurous, and I can't do much better than recommending it to you. There are some other good tracks, like "I Never", the Elliott Smith tribute "It Just Is", and the title track. But "Portions For Foxes" will get you out of the late-summer doldrums, and besides, it was somehow named in a June Time magazine article about the best songs of the summer. How indie!

i dunno...i was very excited about this album but after a few listens i'm only lukewarm to it. portions is good, and i love the over-the-top melodrama of does he love you? i'm partially turned off by the slickness, but i think it's more than that.

i can't believe i agree with *shudder* pitchfork on this

I'm a sucker for Accidentl Deth and The Absence of God on this album but I think it's because I've been listening to Portions for Foxes since their KCRW appearance last May that it doesn't hit me as much anymore.

I've been marvelling on some of the more inspired lyrical work on the album the past few days. Just stellar stuff.

And I'm the exact opposite Ambrose. It's the polish that makes it work for me. Being able to hear strings and horns on a RK record without it drowning out Jenny's voice? That's the magick.

Very nice song, this Arms Outstretched. I wouldn't call it polished, in the dead-commercial-pop sense of the word... It's pretty sweet and low-key in its intention actually. Cheers!

I just talked about "Portions For Foxes"on my blog and how a section of it is, for me, the most exhilirating moment of the year.

Still not available in my hometown.

mat - arms outstretched is from their last album, not the latest.
as for foxes, i have the line "...bad news / my friends tell me to leave you" running in my head a lot

I'm not sure yet if I love it as much as Execution, but I'm damn sure I love it.

My favorite aspect is Jenny's new confidence in her voice. Man, she belts it. I love that they defied the indie low-fi aesthetic and made an unapologetically beautiful album. Hail the return of big, ambitious music!

I too heart Jenny, btw.

i don't love it yet--which makes me sad. i did love blake's song instantaneously but the other stuff seems just a little too produced.
