I too know the ways of the funk...

no pony

"The Horse" by Jesse James -- No, this song isn't a veiled reference to heroin, this Horse is one dirty, funky jam (just listen to the drummer, for christsake!) in the 'dance record' style, with shout outs directing the dance-floor - Jesse James was writing for the new 'Phil L.A. of Soul' label in 1967, where he heard, and quickly signed, Cliff Nobles & Co. to the label in early 1968. This version of the song features the instrumental track from the Nobles & Co. 45, the b-side of "Love Is All Right," but sports a vocal by James. Does anyone out there know how to do the horse? Check out this great site for more horse info.

keep on!

"Keep On Doin' What You're Doin'" by Bobby Byrd -- Here's another killer, by the legendary Bobby Byrd on James Brown's label, Brownstone. Byrd is best known as the founder of The Famous Flames, the group which backed Brown on many of his hits. Byrd also was the "warm up" act at most of Brown's live concerts before returning to perform with the group. This is solid hard funk! Pick up some funky Byrd 45's of your own here, or try to find yourself his best of, or this indie-released cd.

PS. It looks like that Crazy Beat Records store has about 3000 funk 45s in stock, so if there's a particular record you're after, they probably have it.
