A little slice of Cake to start the weekend

Cake

Why doesn't Cake get more attention? I know saying they're "underappreciated" sounds a bit ridiculous, considering they were the Next Big Thing for so long, but I still don't feel they're appreciated enough now. Their last album, Comfort Eagle was the most inventive yet, and Shadow Stabbing was probably my favorite track off it. While I don't know their early stuff very well, and while "The Distance" and "Sad Songs and Waltzes" are two of my favorite songs ever, and while Prolonging the Magic is probably my favorite of theirs, there's something about Comfort Eagle that's irretrieavably ... weird. We need weird bands more than ever now, though, and John McCrae continues to be a great vocalist (love that habit of delaying every word by half a beat!). You can buy Comfort Eagle here, and while you're at it, check out the genius Prolonging the Magic and McCrae's fine vocals on Ben Folds Live.

I love Cake. Their weird white man's funk and Ween-esque lyrics are great, and they write excellent, catchy songs.

Commissioning a Symphony in C = a classic.

Not to mention the song, "Comfort Eagle", with that "He is in the music business, he is calling you 'Dude!'" refrain. Geniusness.

I haven't listened to this album in a long time. I don't know if I tossed this into a box or if I given it to my sister. I might just have to listen to it again now.
