We Both Got Fired Exactly the Same Day

Float On

Ben Lee - Float On. So, Modest Mouse wrote this song, and I'm sure you've heard it, seen the video, and probably even seen it performed live. Ben Lee, rather than taking the common indie route and covering "Hey Ya," decided that he would tackle this new classic for a contemporary cover.

What quickly became a staple of a live show also became the first single released by his new label: Ten Fingers, which is something of an offshoot of Dim Mak. This cover is the A-side, with Montreal's Pony Up on the flip [Buy It].

As for the quality of the song, it's ok. It's slower tempo, and the catchy, driving guitar line is missing and has been replaced by a quiet piano. There's an off-the-cuff studio "oops" towards the end that tries to capture a live-without-overdubs effect, but misses the mark. What do you guys think?

I was all set not to like it, but it's not bad. I kind of miss the energy of the first one, but he does a good job at keeping the melody intact.

I think this is bad.

for the record, Ben Lee DID cover Hey Ya
When I saw him back in November of last year
he did a bit of the "shake it" part

shameless piggybacking on hype. the least he could have done is pick, like, another fucking song but the big single. just to, you know, PRETEND that wasn't what he was doing. (like flaming lips covering knives out.)

the arrangement isn't bad, though. if you're going to cover a song make it your own, i always say. no reason to cover a song if you're just going to to recreate the original. i know a bunch of people if i showed it to they'd probably like this version better since they think isaac brock shouldn't ever sing anything. to me this shows exactly why he SHOULD sing, but whatever.

I started out not liking it, I thought to myself, "I never thought Isaac's vocals would be missed, but here we are..." But, a little bit more and it won me over, big time. It's not the same uplifting everything is gonna be all right so let's go out and do something wild vibe, but more like a guy lying in bed in the morning strugglin to face the morning repeating to himself "we'll all float on, we'll all float on" like a mantra.

I didn't like this. Too mopey.

What kind of a man would turn Modest Mouse into an outdoor moper?

Poor Ben Lee - for a while there didn't it seem like he was going to be a (sort of) big deal? I personally think that Breathing Tornados is a really under-rated record, better than any Noise Addict stuff I've heard. I think most people are just annoyed that he got to go out with Claire Danes and they didn't.

This is an interesting take on a song that would be hard to fuck up. It makes me want to get his last album. I'm deciding here and now to continue to champion the Mr. Lee.

thanks for posting the song. I played on it but for some reason hadn't gotten a cd copy yet and was curious as to how it turned out! FYI - we (Ben, Lara, and I) did it on a whim at the end of recording the new record - we were having a lot of fun and were just in the spirit of doing things...ya know, why not? Next thing you know it gets released.

It's sure to get mixed opinions and that's what I like about it.
Thanks again,
mcgowan

I actually really like it. Im usually not a big fan of covers. I like it, but its a totally different like than the way I like the Modest Mouse version. They're just on different levels I think.

i respect the lee... not too much into his music, but from a mod mouse fan pov, he does a crazy good job with it... similar to maynard doing layne's man in the box... not the same as the original, but i'd think in some alternate universe where lee fronted mod mouse and maynard alice, i could see this being the new hotness

I ran across this on Windows Media and took a listen. I can't decide if this is worse than the Kidz Bop 7 version... No not as bad, but this is a song that I feel needn't be covered at all.

I thought it was a decent cover. All you music elitists need to quit rubbing eachothers dicks and loosen up a bit.

I think Modest Mouse is absolutely genius and it's incredible to hear Ben Lee doing one of their songs...I would encourage everyone to go out and buy everything both artists have ever put out1
