A Change is Gonna Come

For my first entry as me (Mark's let me post as him before), I had to put in a plug for some political involvement this year. After November 2 it'll be all back to the weird stuff, but for right now, the stakes is too high so you need some inspiration. Here are some tracks that do it for me

Sam Cooke

"Sam Cooke--A Change is Gonna Come" I saw Patti Labelle cover this at the Democratic Convention and was floored. The original is Sam Cooke's zenith. Buy the Album

.

Future Soundtrack for America

"Mike Doughty--Move On" I think Doughty's track has got the best synthesis of politics and music this year. Brusie has already posted from this comp put out by Barsuk Records (full disclosure, I work for one of the groups receiving proceeds from this comp)

.

Op Ivy

"Operation Ivy--Unity" This one's to get you worked up. Most recently, this has appeared on the second volume of Fat Mike's Rock Against Bush comp which you can find at Fat Wreck Chords.

Damn, I was gonna post "A Change Is Gonna Come" soon! Awesome song. I saw Malcolm X this weekend, in which that song is used to great effect.
Also love the Mike Doughty track. That whole comp is pretty decent.

thank you for posting the sam cooke song. he's someone i've long read about but never listened to, even during my soul music phase. this song is stunning.

i hope everyone who visits this site will download the sam cooke song. it's indeed the best of his career, and one of the most moving pieces of music i've ever heard.

ps - ambrose chapel, meet me and jimmy stewart at royal albert hall.

Damn, Operation Ivy is one of the best ska bands ever. Never get tired of listening to their stuff, 12 years since I started.

Operation Ivy isn't so much a ska band as it is a straight-up punk/hardcore act with ska influences, I'd say. Just my 2.
