"Saturday (Version)" by J. Xaverre --Pete, aka J Xaverre, is a lo-fi bedroom producer, but he got off to a running start with Kenickie - the teenage Garage Punk/pop group - for whom he drummed, guitared, produced and wrote songs. Under this particular alias, he's written tons of songs, and with a little mixing and production help from Dave Trumfio (who worked with Wilco on their last album, and My Morning Jacket), he's pulled off something really special. This song, from his most recent record These Acid Stars, starts off like a warm blanket, then the drums, synths and guitars kick in and those above-mentioned 'acid stars' start drifting around the room... solid, right?

"You're So Vain" by The Black Neon -- All I've got on this song is from the Memphis Industries site: The Black Neon is the alter ego of Fort Lauderdale "sleezard" king, Steve Webster. This is the bit in which Steve indulges his love of 80s synth pop and brings, with a sick wink, disrepute to a discotheque near you.
I always hated this Carly Simon song, but this way, its at least a funny electro-disco take on it. I'm certainly curious to see what you all think.

Anyway, both these cuts come from the label comp, Estuary English, 17 tracks of goodies, as they said "23 records and a T-shirt down the line Memphis have decided to celebrate their 25th offering by gathering together highlights from past, present, and future releases" - and there are a number of goodies on there. Get J.Xaverre's album here or here, check out the comp here, and check out more from Black Neon here.

Blair, I'm sorry, but this cover of "you're so vain" sucks as bad as Original Hamsta's "notorious DSP" or ANY OTHER SONG THAT USES THAT SAME BULLSHIT ROBOT VOICE. ZZZZZ.

I'd rather hear the artist sing a very very bad vocal cover than another goddamn robot voice cover. The music in the background is ok, but goddamn it save me from musicians who think robot voice covers are innovative in 2004.

ha! nice one darwin - I'm fairly positive Black Neon has no grand desires to be innovative... I'm guessing the cover is meant to be just what I think it is, to be funny.

To quote Morrissey :

"
I would laugh /
But that joke isn't funny anymore!

To be fair, the cover was done in 1998. Way ahead of its time I say. Course, it does sound a bit daft now we're in 2004

I stand corrected. Original Hamsta is the biter.

Pwned by 4 years.
