All you can eat at the Sizzler

Clem Snide

Eef Barzelay kills me. Barzelay is the lead singer of the band Clem Snide, and there's something about his voice that goes through me in a way that the best vocalists do, like Chrissie Hynde and Willie Nelson. The songs aren't too shabby, either. Though I haven't heard their two newest offerings (one of which, an EP, has a decent cover of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful"), my favorite Clem Snide record is The Ghost of Fashion, which oscillates between sleepy country and hyper rock 'n' roll. Though there are a few tracks I could post to really get your week going, like "Ice Cube", I'm going to give you a beautiful tale of romantic martyrdom:

Joan Jett of Arc

You can already tell from the title that it's full of little pop culture puns, but they're sung with a sincerity that might just break your heart.
One of my favorite concert memories was seeing this band on the edge of a small pond at the college I went to in Maine. They played in May, when everything was just thawing out, and the sun was in that 4 p.m. droopy position, and there were only a few people lying on the grass to hear Clem Snide. Go see them if you get a chance, and pick up The Ghost of Fashion here or get it from iTunes.

Comments

I recently discovered Clem Snide and instantly fell in love after hearing the delightful, yet sorrow filled tune "Lonliness Finds Her Own Way."

Just for recommendation, something of similar interest might be Adem, not sure if anyone here has heard them – a must listen!

Hey,

Thanks for posting the Clem Snide track. More people should be introduced to their stirring and eloquent music.

I know it's a cliche, but Eef et al are a real breath of fresh air in the music world. I first heard their album Your Favourite Music through a friend, and it won me over instantly.

Like all the best records, it is sad and sweet at the same time, melancholy yet uplifting.

As you said, Eef Barzelay's lyrics are one of their selling points: clever without being clever clever, off-centre without being inaccessible.

I would recommend anyone else to go check them out.

Thanks a big bunch!
