Never heard such sexy clicks...

busted
"Back to the Start" by Herbert -- Matthew Herbert is one of my favorite weirdo-house artists, and this is a great example of his genius at work. Paired, as he usually is, with Dani Siciliano on vocals, Herbert brings to the table percussion made of out all manner of items (including internal medical microphones, a technique he learned from his pals in Matmos), and all recorded in "Swingtime" - all of this is done with particular rules he's established for himself (see the 'Manifesto' section of his site), which essentially boil down to always creating as much of the sounds as possible by himself, whether its by playing 'real' instruments, never using presets with synths, no drum machines, "9. A notation of sounds used to be taken and made public." and "10. A list of technical equipment used to be made public." - these constraints just make for more interesting listening, in my opinion. Matthew has also recorded as Radioboy, Doctor Rockit, Wishmountain, and his most recent project The Matthew Herbert Big Band (a real Big Band/Jazz Orchestra that he wrote/played in, then manipulated the sounds of later), and has produced music for film and television - talk about versatile, huh? When he remixes other people, its always with the same careful hand, most of which are available on the compilation Secondhand Sounds (which also has some tracks of his other aliases). Also good is his mix CD, Lets All Make Mistakes, which collects some truly great variations on house music. Anyway, this song comes from the "Leave Me Now" single, which, like much of his output is mighty sweet - it swings, it bumps, and Dani's voice is like silk covered in honey. Purchase the single here - also, I highly reccomend "The Audience" single, available here.

I've heard sexier clicks - trying anything on Force, Inc. outta Montreal from about three years back. Herbert's track is nice, instantly easy on the ears to be sure, but it's old ground that's been better covered.

No hate implied - thanks for doing what'cha do and posting what'cha post.

i love the "no offense" style statement. as if a mere sentence could make it so. like people should really be like, "oh, so you think i shouldn't be insulted? well, fine then. i'll endure your criticism, and then listen to your advice for how i should take it, as well."

Thanks for this song!
I can actually recommend most of the stuff on his label Accidental Records (including Mugison, the Soft Pink Truth, International Space Station, all great!). A compilation CD called "You Are Here" (with artwork from Stanley Donwood, the guy who does the Radiohead albums) sums it all up. It's all lovely, soft but interesting, electronic-tinted music.
Additionally all this stuff can be sampled and downloaded on Warp's website bleep.com.

Payne, no Hate taken - and FYI, this song isn't treading "old ground" it is just an older song, c. 2000, so its totally concurrent with Force Inc. (which, I agree, is a great label too) - I'm just waiting to see what Herbert does next, since his Big Band thing was totally bonkers. thanks for the comments!

I really like it, sounds like he's playing the spoons or something.
