dusty and delicious

RJD2 - The Takeoff.

RJ is on tour now (I'll be at the show at Northsix tomorrow night, in case anyone else is going), but he released this LP on both CD and wax containing instrumentals from some of his best work, as well as a slew of instrumental b-sides and unreleased cuts. even though this is entirely non-vocal and mostly non-album, and the CD looks pretty bootleg (even though it's supposedly on his own Bustown Pride label), the whole thing gives a solid listen, and has held up as well for me with repeat listenings the same way his albums have.

as far as I can tell, this track is the instrumental from an Aceyalone collab that showed up on a compilation called Disco Pogo For Punks In Pumps Vol. 9 on Jockey Slut records. and I know nothing about any of that. but the song itself stands out from the collection in that is takes a softer, more synth-y approach to production that RJ often seems to shelve in favor of his dusty sampling obsession. furthermore, the two drum tracks compliment each other nicely, and the whole thing emerges as distinct and somewhat refreshing when you stack it up next to his tried-and-true formulae for sample-heavy hits. not that I have anything against those, I just enjoy seeing another side to his work. I have to say, I was nervous about where he was going post-Deadringer, and after the phenomenal Since we last spoke and this collection, I'm convinced that he's in this for the long run. he's one to watch the way everyone watched Shadow back in the early 90's.

you can buy this and all of his other releases at the Turntablelab, so [buy some already].

Wow, that's one of the hottest RJD2 tracks I've heard in a long time (I did skip the last album though). I'd like to hear the vocal version.

disco pogo for punks in pumps was the cd that came on the front of jockey slut magazine, the now sadly defunct british electro/dance magazine.

well, i hope you're right about this one being a bootleg because the track is a "cover" of one of most famous jean-michel jarre's tracks and if not mentioned as such , sampling clearance could cost rjd2 more than pocket change! jmjarre is son of maurice jarre, a famous film score composer (dr.zhivago, lawrence of arabia, ghost etc) and one of the first french electronic music artist (he even studied at IRCAM, with pierre henry) his absolute hit is oxygene (maybe that's this track actually). as far as sampling goes, i'm pretty sure he's not the kind of guy to fuck with ... btw, the cover is better than the original which sucks!

i agree. Oxygene isn't very good at all. Lots of synth seagulls and fake ocean waves and whatnot. Obviously he was somewhat groundbreaking, but I'll take this RJD2 version. I'll have to go back to that album and compare.

Mark, how was the RJD2 show? I couldn't go. I wanna hear all about it!

Posted by: stereogum at October 4, 2004 04:47 PM

I'm pretty sure that the Jean Michel Jarre track is from Equinox and not Oxygene

This is terrible, this is the lowest form of remixing, it's what face of disgust causing unknowns, who try to spread their songs through file sharing services, do. It's a high frequency pitched sample of jean michelle jarre with a drum loop over it. Horrible.

To all you bad ass mammajamma dissing jean michelle jarre, he is as contemporary today as he was in the 70s, in fact more so. He has in the late 60's managed to produce music which my friends think is by some more melodic múm-like band of today. If his music was to be re-issued in a few years under some nordic guise there would be even some music mags fooled in to thinking it's the new cool thing from iceland and bjork would be all over for a collaboration.

mark didn't make the Northsix show - that was me.

but to answer your question, pretty damn solid. Diplo opened up, and played a superb set of mash-ups and mixes, more along the lines of his work with Hollertronix than his solo stuff (though he did play a few singles and closed by mixing Radiohead's Idiotheque into Diplo Rhythm).

RJ was a fucking machine. he was running four turntables and playing an MPC, and basically reconstructing his songs from the original samples. but what was totally unbelievable was how fast he was - he did the entire thing virtually mistake-free, and he didn't use headphones to queue samples. even Mixmaster Mike uses headphones live. damn.

and to top it off, homeslice brought out an acoustic guitar and sang an unplugged version of Making Days Longer (yes, that is him on the album vocals evidently). multi-talented fuck.

I paid 13$ and got 15$ worth of entertainment. see him if you have a chance. and support Diplo - he'll dethrone Z-Trip as the mash-up party guy if he keeps on going at this rate.

genetik freek you sure know your classics! you're probably right about equinoxe, oxygene was the first title that came to me,as i'm not (and most important NEVER WAS a jmjarre fan)
well jef, i wasn't dissing the guy. i just don't like what i know of his music (the hits) or what he seems to be. to his credits, i'll save the beautiful lyrics of "les mots bleus" ( by
christophe) but what you say about mùm/bjork is funny and, as music marketing mags and critics are involved, could certainly happen! JM last summer's tabloid adventures sure make him very contemporary (and just when a new dvd is out!) cheers

Does anyone know where the RJD2 sample from the track, 'Ghostwriter' came from, you know, the horns and percussion and what not...any direction would be much appreciated?
