hell froze

this doesn't happen often folks. I'm about to speak well of an indie rock record.

Ambulance LTD - Yoga means union

I saw Ambulance open for the Killers at Irving Plaza the other week, and they stole the whole damn show for me. in their press kit some idiot mistakenly touts them as post/dance-punk all-stars (paraphrasing, but it was something like that), but all of what that conjures up in your head musically Ambulance is not exactly. what they are is refreshing, upbeat, and fun enough to enjoy amidst a sea of sad-bastard-weepy-sweater-boy indie blorch. their music ain't post/dance/anything punk, but more accurately blends classic and pop rock themes with an infusion of blues and their own touch that stands alone from my limited collection of rock references.

the track Yoga means union, despite its hippy-esque name, is a 4 and a half minute lyricless journey continually builds on itself to leave you with a monster of a song by the time it ends. it's fairly similar to some of the instrumental tracks by the Secret Machines I've heard, and reminds me of a distilled version of the 45-minute set they played at the July 4th show 2003. anyhow. it's a tremendous song.

but wait! they don't stop there! Anecdote shows off the softer touch present on most of the LP (Yoga is the only balls-out thrasher), with the almost alt-country sound and playful builds into the utterly charming chorus. if that's too soft for you, try Heavy Lifting, which treads the line between the two. harder on the rock, but soft enough to keep the cat from waking up.

all in all, I haven't had this much fun listening to an indie rock record in, shit, a while. see them live (hopefully some of you caught them at CMJ shows, they were around) if you have the chance - it's great beer-drinkin' & toe tappin' music. and of course, [buy their LP]. thanks to Than for the promo copy.

Comments

Shoegaze minus the aural pretention inherent in the genre. Ambulance is willing the bend those genres to fit their desires on any given song. From that chug-cha-chuga-chug at the end of "Yoga Means Union" to the gentle twang of "Anecdote" to the slow groove of "Ophelia".

I first saw them opening for the Thrills (again stealing the show, but not as hard to do here than it was with the Killers) at a tiny club in Madison, WI. Seeing them in your face, thrashing away at guitars and maniacally pounding the keyboard and drums in the extensive crescendo at the end of "Young Urban" literally makes one break out in a cold sweat. It smacks of sophomoric hyperbole but the energy they put out there gets inside of you and it becomes a rather moving experience.

Now make no mistake, the Killers are a catchy, fun band; but, you can tell from the infectiousness of "Mr. Brightside" or "Somebody Told Me" (not to mention Flowers' stage presence) that their mass appeal is temporal. Like Dirty Vegas, or Franz Ferdinand or any number of bands, they are a fun summertime diversion that will quickly disperse. Ambulance, on the other hand, at least has the potential in their songs for growth and change. Which should, given their progress from their EP to "LP", prove to be an fabulous synthesis of all that works from a mess of different genres.

Does anyone know how to go about setting up an mp3 blog? If so, please spread the knowledge. THanks

Holy smokes! Yoga Means Union! Regardless of the absence of lyrics, this song moves with a vengeance! I'd like to feature it in my podcast to gain them some more exposure.

Speaking of which...how awesome would it be if you guys translated this site into into a podcast? It seems a PERFECT fit!

I'd like to talk more with ya about this. Email me here: jasonevangelho@gmail.com

Keep up the great site!
Jason

Re. D_:

Soul Sides' guide to exactly that is probably a great place to get started.

i think to have an mp3 on blogspot is something to do with using right click, than creating a link to the mp3, or picture.
