I Got a Brand New Song But the Same Old Dance

I was at CMJ this weekend, speechifying and all. Afterwards, lots of folk came up to shake hands, exchange business cards, kiss my baby, etc. A few others slipped me some cds. Now, generally that's a scary proposition. You don't want to let anyone down, but 9 times out of 10 that cd is usually some field recordings of airport bathrooms or some equally obnoxious garbage. So a guy hands me this cd by DC-based Food For Animals and my first thought is "Oh no." It had less than no information and looked decidedly emo. So it was with low hopes when I slipped it into the cd player.
The first track, "Oh Oh Oh" drops and it's this insane cut 'n paste MPC madness, but nothing spectacular. 30 seconds later "Elephants" comes on and all of a sudden it's like Chuck D rapping over the Pi soundtrack (in JP's words). Turns out this cd is fucking incredible. Old school protest rap over slash n' drill beats and wheezes. I love it. Highly highly HIGHLY recommended. You can pick the whole thing up for 12 bucks HERE. And thank them.
So whoever that kid was that sent me this, a tremendous and heartful thanks.

In other news, CMJ was awesome. Met all sorts of wonderful people, put faces to names and learned a boatload about the industry. Seems us MP3 bloggers are making some waves out there, and people are listening. It's great to hear. So stay tuned for lots more good music coming our way, as well as a solid article in SPIN that should be out any day now. We'll keep you posted.
