On to the World Series!

Dropkick Murphys

Well, folks, I don't know about you, but I watched last night's Red Sox-Yankees game with a combination of excitement, disbelief and complete stress. We pulled it off, though, and I'm sure many of you out there don't care, but us fans from Boston are flipping our shit right now. What better occasion than to provide you with a song to root the Sox on to break an 86-year-old curse?

Tessie

Yep, it's the Dropkick Murphys, who have surely had finer hours, but this song sends chills down the spines of Red Sox Nation members. The song itself is actually from 1903, when a group of fans called the Royal Rooters were the cheering section for the team then known as the Boston Pilgrims (which, when you think about it, is a more appropriate name, don't you think?).
This track features not only the Dropkick Murphys (who were comissioned to record it by Red Sox Executive Vice President Charles Steinberg and Boston Herald writer Jeff Horrigan) but Johnny Damon, Bronson Arroyo and Lenny Dinardo from the Red Sox.

The track is available on a five-track EP, which you can buy on iTunes. Proceeds go to the Red Sox Foundation, which goes towards helping kids in Massachusetts who are less fortunate. So if you like what you hear, buy the CD, okay?
And go Sox.
For the love of God, go Sox.

PS - I'll be performing tonight, Thursday, at the Sportsman's Pub in Minneapolis, for whoever's in the area. I'm scheduled to go on at 11 p.m. The bar is at 2124 Como Avenue SE.
I'll be playing there every other (as in alternating) Thursday night.

Actually, I find "Red Sox" to be an entirely appropriate name. *points at the esteemed Mr. Schilling's ankle before wandering off to learn the bagpipe part to this song*

For that authentic 1903 flavor, you can hear an early wax cylinder recording of Tessie here.

Fun background info here on Tessie, the Rooters, and the Un-Cursed Red Sox here.

β€œIt was a real hum-dinger of a song, but it sort of got on your nerves after a while.”
