it's thinking

I'm not lying when I say the kids are different these days. what were you doing when you were 15? what was I doing when I was 15? I'm willing to guess it wasn't anything like this:

Oliver I. - untitled

I wanted to post this track because I think it's remarkable (and humiliating) that all instruments, vocals, recording and editing were done by a single 10th grader. I know blair has posted some student-made music previously, and I feel obliged to do the same based on how much this song impressed me. it also explains why I always caught him sneaking listens to the White Album as often as possible before and after class. blair comments that it reminded him quite a bit of Jon Brion, and from what little I know of his work I guess I'd have to agree.

it's important to give the young'uns your undivided attention every now and then so they can utterly amaze you. I get that luxury at work every day, but keep it in mind the next time your cousin/nephew/child/student is pestering you to the point of insanity. chances are they might show you something amazing that'll make you wonder what you're doing that impresses them so much.

anyhow, see The Incredibles. best. movie. EVER. and get this: Pixar takes aim at the Nascar demographic. they're going to make a fortune.

Comments

I am completely shocked at how good this is. I mean, it's good for anyone, but (and I know it's totally lame to stick this in) so good for someone so young. I'm very jealous. It does remind me a lot of Jon Brion as well, and maybe someone like Todd Rungren or ELO, too. The kid's really fucking good.
And yes, I too saw The Incredibles, and all of you should go see it. It's very, very good.

I agree. This is good. His vocals could use a little work, but otherwise it's a perfect little pop number. This should definitely be part of our cd project, if he'll agree to it. And I think brusie should produce him.

can somebody please get that guy a contract? thanks.

Posted by: Michael at November 8, 2004 6:51 PM

not sure if you've heard any of his other stuff, but a lot can be found at his cornerband site (i recommend 'let's get it on' (although 'who the fuck is lily kaminsky' has it charms)) and a more recent song, radical chic which is, in my opinion, on par with the untitled track. the cornerband stuff is mostly from 9th grade, and he wrote and produced an ep-esque smattering of songs over the summer, a lot of which i haven't heard, but it's good stuff, and i'm sure he'd be willing to procure it for you if asked.

thank you for the write-up jp!

but there are more important matters at stake, namely do you or don't you know and love madlib?! also of quasimoto fame, he's the best and thing. get the madvillain and quasimoto records if you don't already, but i bet you do!!

Wow! this is the shit...shades of the Beta Band, the Beatles and vaguely CSNY...

Thanks for the post, I'll be happy to say I heard it here first!

Just found out about this kid and his group on MTV's TRL. The little I heard of his song sounds very good. It's very Beatles-like.

The link to his MP3 appears to be dead here. Where can I get his music??

Wow, I heard this song playing on MTV while I was websurfin. I just had to hear more of it. It's awesome. This guy is way talented considering he did everything producing this song. If he can do all that, maybe he can market his music himself. Or maybe have a good and non-greedy music label do it for him. I'm just worried his music will be lost in some music corporate's copyright ownership or worse and be watered down to some corporate version. I think there is an independent website music company promoting artists and giving them all the rights to their songs in the web. I believe that online company only ask for 50 percent of the profits and gives the artist the other 50 percent instead of the 5-10 percent a newly signed artist gets from big music labels. Thanks for posting the music on the web.

Who wrote this comment on his music site?
"Oliver Ignatius was born in early mid 1989 in early late colonial Hong Kong with a rare disorder named musical hallucinosis which causes him to function as though there is a finely tuned FM radio stationed inside his head. Unfortunately, from 1993 through 1995, the radio was tuned to a station which only played 'Love Shack.' Oliver swore to escape music once and for all and renounced his middle class background to live in a Tibetan monastery. He finally realized that fate was working against him when Phil Collins and Sting moved into the monastery. Rediscovering pop music, he flitted about in righteous indie combos Unhappy Duck and The Aphrodites. Unfortunately, he lost his contact book with the phone numbers of his bandmates and was forced to go solo. He now divides his time between recording bedroom rock symphonies and singing with the rama lama fa fa fa rock and roll combo The Noise. Recently, after a sex and peyote binge, he fell in love with the sound of his own voice and has slathered all of his tracks in endless vocal overdubs. He'll probably regret it later."

I thought it was true at first and then I realized the guy who wrote this was joking around. Anyway it was funny.

I just listened to mostly untitled. Wow he really sounds amazing. I can't stop playing it over and over again. Does anyone know how i can get in touch with him like a screen name or email address?
If you do could you email me it to kailee@outasiteweb.com Thanks!

Posted by: Kailee at January 21, 2005 11:25 AM

I kinda know Oliver from this message board we both use and all i have to say is that i was blown away when i downloaded this! I had no idea! Very much a perfect (or at least near perfect) pop song. They just don't make them like this anymore! Or do they? ;)

Keep up the good work Oli! As i told you on the other forum you should see about getting this released as a single or even try to see if an EP is a possibility. Of course you must be buried under school work but i can see you love music enough to see this through!

Hey does anyone have any relatives or friends in the music biz, Ive got this rock band that rules the south eastern coast that i need to get out to the masses....and my twin whos in the band also said that I need to get us famous while he is at his 9-5 job, so that he wont have to go anymore.
and oh yeah the oliver kid sounds good. the vocal overdubs remind me of elliot smith. thanks!

Posted by: bailey at January 24, 2005 2:34 AM

I remember Oliver from when he went to my school a few years ago and sang at assembly. Glad to know that he's getting somewhere, because I can't remember a single person who didn't think he had an amazing voice and a load of talent. And I agree that releasing this song as a single would be a good idea.

Posted by: Nina at February 2, 2005 11:25 AM

Oliver did not record, edit, or mix this song himself. First off, it doesn't have any editing. Secondly, I and my co-worker at the time recorded and mixed it in a very humble Connecticut-based studio. Personally, I am really unhappy with the way the mix turned out and would've had Oliver and the drummer re-do a few parts which are off, but there were time restrictions in place. His friend Ray Weiss played drums, however Oliver did perform everything else himself, including the 4 tracks of vocals. He's able to lay down all of the instruments in one or two takes, seemingly writing some of the parts on the spot. Yes, it was amazing. There are 3 or 4 more solo recordings from this period (summer 2004) floating around, but I think Olivers intentions were for his band, The Hysterics, to record and perform them. Glad to see his talent gaining some attention! Thank you, JP!

true dat, credit where credit is due

sorry jens that that fact didn't get stated initially, there was a little miscommunication

Posted by: oliver at February 8, 2005 10:21 PM

my apologies as well - the misunderstandings were mostly mine, but I'm glad it's all cleared up now.

Posted by: jp at February 9, 2005 11:25 AM

Wow...I'm a senior and this stuff makes me jealous...I write lyrics and things, but I've never done anything with them and to know that a sophmore has done like a million more things than I have with his music is...almost depressing but great because the music is amazing...you guy's will get signed become big and then all the people that didn't know who you were back then or gave you shit will be kicking the hell out of themselves. Good job and good luck you guys you'll all go far.

Posted by: Kayce at March 13, 2005 4:52 AM

He Oliver,

I'm from Orange Ca and I saw your bit on MTV last night, I think its great that your teacher inspires you and great that MTV did that segment. You have talent! keep it up!...finish school...get rich @ the same time ;) Definently pick up on your Beatles influence in "Mostly Untitled"! I think you should stick to songs with that tempo, maybe a little more "rock" as the song sounds better when your really singing from your lungs. You have a lot of eenergy and listeners pick up on that. Take care and good luck.

Posted by: Pascale de St Antoine at March 20, 2005 10:02 PM

Yes It's good, but here's the truth... Oliver Ignatius is a RICH little white kid. His parents send him away to an elite arty school with no real curriculum where he can simply use the school's extensive recording equipment for hours and hours on end. I know this because my sister-in-law teaches at the school. She sent me his mp3's months before he was featured on MTV. They were good, but in the context I understand they were created, it didn't blow me away. The kid has talent, but don't imagine some prodigy kid at home recording wondrous Beatlesque pop into his home computer. This kid is good, and lucky enough to take advantage of his privileged status.

Posted by: John at July 27, 2005 1:21 PM

Hey Oliver,
I'm sure you don't remember me from HKIS, but I just wanted you to know that we're all really proud of you over here... I always knew you'd go a couple steps further than us and I'm glad I was right. Keep it up!
Liana.
