sell it on the eucharist

Oliver Ignatius - Celestial Bugaboo

Oliver Ignatius - Radical Chic

the robots are pleased to announce the insanely talented, whiskerless rock prodigy Oliver Ignatius is working with m.f-r on developing an EP and potentially an LP a little further down the line. in case this doesn't ring a bell, I posted a song of his recently that met with some acclaim. his vital stats are: he's 15, he's a somewhat of a musical genius (he played all the instruments, recorded and mixed these tracks by himself).

in the meantime, here's two more songs he's been working on. one on the more melodic acoustic tip, and another that cranks up the rock content a notch or three. enjoy, and seriously, all you label-types out there, give this kid a contract.

I'm still very impressed. Sounds like he's mid-puberty. I wonder what that'll turn out like.
But as long as his talent doesn't fade (unlikely), he's got enormous potential.

This is absolutely amazing stuff. The lyrical content is pre-teen Nickelodeon, but it brings a bit more to the table than Noise Addict did, although Ben Lee did get Claire Danes out of the deal. This guys is destined for greatness. I will be looking out for a release.

have any of you tried to write songs? this is not special at all. pick up a guitar and learn 3 chords and you'll make up the same shit.

thank you Andre Previn for your insightful comments.

Now if you have something better to bring to the table (other than your anonymous bullshit), we'd love to hear it.

Wow, this guy's amazing! These tracks all sound like some long lost Pop nuggets form the 60's / 70's. The fact that he sang, played, recorded and mixed everything just blows my mind. I just hope he doesn't get a record deal right away; he'll just be turned into a flavor of the month teen idol. And all that talent will be sadly wasted.

exactly. i love Andre Previn. and everything else you post.

Wow. No kidding - this is awesome stuff. How do you find this stuff? Great blog by the way. Take care - Mike D

hey now, he didn't mix those tracks by himself, or play all of the instruments. Ray Weiss and Jens Jungkurth deserve some props. aka no.

tis good though

Posted by: yo at November 26, 2004 01:16 AM

whoever it was that said his music was three chord "shit" needs to shut his face. ignatius would never sell himself to MTV or what have you cause when i knew him he frowned upon that stuff. im not sure that he did all of the instruments and mixing himself but i wouldnt be suprised, the dude is a freakin musical maniac. he's also a really nice guy if you don't have shitty musical taste.

I promise you when it says he does everything himself he does everything, he is in a seperate bend who he records with as well but the stuff under his name is totally him.

I recorded and mixed the Beatles-esque track posted by JP in the other thread, "mostly untitled", and Stephe Cooper recorded some of the vocal overdubs. A mutual friend of Olivers and mine, Ray Weiss, who is also a very talented young song writer/multi-instrumentalist (and 17-yrs old!!) played drumkit. Oliver sung and played everything else in one or two takes and could've done the drums better if he'd wanted to I'm sure. His timing and sense of rhythm is impeccable. We recorded this and 4 other songs in summer 2004 at Studio 59 in New Milford, CT where Stephe and myself were employed. It's a very small, dead-sounding room with a Yamaha 01V mixer, Pro Tools LE system, and some dirt cheap microphones. I'm really dissappointed with the way those mixes came out and would've had Oliver and/or Ray re-do some parts if we'd had the time, but it was a quick and sloppy kind of deal.
The kid is absolutely fucking incredible to see/hear and I'm really, really glad to see him getting some attention. The tunes we did were cut in one or two 2 hour blocks of time and Oliver would just come in, say "give me a click track at this tempo" and start laying down all the parts in usually one take. I would've liked to make him do more than one take and get the tunning better and such but that was the way he worked comfortably.
I haven't seen or spoken to Oliver since then even though he lives 2 blocks from me so I can't really tell you what he's up to. I believe he has a live band that sounds similar and does some recordings on a computer in his bedroom. The other songs we recorded this summer were a cover of Little Willie John's "Leave My Kitten Alone" with a live band, a solo Oliver Ignatius song that sounds a lot like a Rolling Stones song - I don't know if it has a title, another one that's just vocal and piano (Yamaha Clavinova, actually. We didn't have a real piano.), and a mellow song called "Love Is The Only Way" where Oliver played everything himself, including the drums.

Wow, these guys are really impressive, after their mtv debut they had to have gotten a whole lot of fans, like myself. I was surprised to hear something as good as this that wasn't popular, maybe MTV is finally turing into a real music network! Well hope to hear more from them! If they put out an album I will most definatly buy it!

I love these guys so much! When are they gonna have some shows? It's awesome that they're only 15. I feel like a loser, I'm 15 and I can't play a lick of guitar. Keep up the work mi hombres! Make an album, play some shows and keep rockin your sockins...yeah.
