micro-remix
there's interesting stuff going on over at positron records, home of sister machine gun, amish rake fight and some other bands that don't have three words in their name.
SMG was one of those bands that got some attention in the mid-nineties when NIN made "industrial" rock popular for a little while. i liked them then; i still like them now. i'm still trying to remember the name of (and track down) a remix of "hole in the ground" that i used to have on a Wax Trax sampler cassette back in the day. it was ten times better than the album version and rocked the car stereo like few other tracks.
anyway, i lost track of that tape and i also lost track of SMG. but they never went away. Positron has a bunch of their albums and a bunch of sample mp3s and oggs (oggs make anders a happy robot). from the sound of it, SMG hasn't even really changed their style too much in the last decade, which makes for some real nostalgiac listening. tell me "To Hell With You" doesn't just take you right back to 1995.
like i said though, there are some interesting things going down at positron. the label seems to be exploring the possibilities of the Creative Commons license. as a first experiment, they've released a Micronauts (SMG's more electro alter-ego) track, "Perdition" under a CC license and are using it as the basis for a remix contest. they put up a remix kit with all the samples and loops to download and the winning submission will get included on the album.
i'm not too crazy about the Micronauts track, but i'm sure as hell curious to see what a million internet monkeys with some audio software will make out of it. if any of our readers decide to submit a remix, post a link in the comments.
positron has an online store too so you can buy any of this stuff directly from them.
