Magneta Lane
Magneta Lane - The Constant Lover. In the musical arm wrestling match between the United States and Canada, our great northern neighbors continue to go over the top. This latest import is a young trio of women that capture the savvy and sexual energy that made the first Stroke's singles so good. With vocals that lazily roll over the guitar melodies, it's got a similar boozy quality to it that I find just about irresistable. It doesn't hurt that vocalist Lexi has a pretty dynamite voice.

This is the titular track off of their debut album, The Constant Lover. You can buy it directly from their label Here. Paper Bag Records has quite a little stable going these days, what with these guys, Uncut and Controller Constroller. Magneta Lane fit ably alongside their labelmates, with hard riffs, solid vocals and the promise of a better musical future.

I highly recommend this album and I'm sure we can expect good things from Lexi, Nadia and French in the years to come. I've been having this discussion wtih lots of folks lately, but my basic assumption is that Canada simply has better music programs in its schools. I could be totally wrong though. What do you guys think?

The number of awesome Canadian musicians is huge: Joni Mitchell, Rufus Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young. Maybe they're just inherently more talented as a people. "As a people?" Is that a racist thing to say about Canadians?
Anyway, I like this track. You're right, it does sound like the Strokes, with a croony female singer. Sounds kinda like the single they did with Regina Spektor.

nice track, Mark. the Strokes comparison is spot on. i don't know anything about Canada's support of music education, but last night I saw Death From Above 1979 (with Panthers and Vietnam all on the Vice Records tour) in Philly and they were fucking awesome. rock on dewds!!

That Magneta Lane track is cool. Ironic being a Canadian finding out about them on your blog :)

Reminds me more of The Pretenders Tattooed Love Boys more than the Strokes though. Anyhow, think I'll have to pick up the CD.

And let's not forget Bryan Adams.
