So Hard To Say...

travel to the phillipines'
"It All Went Downhill Yesterday" and "Another Book" by Phiiliip -- Phiiliip's story is a good one, rising from the underground: “Phiiliip” started using the name (with the extra I's) in 2000, a suggestion from Momus, to help him stand out on Google. Phiiliip released his debut album Pet Cancer on Momus’s label American Patchwork in October 2001. Since then, Phiiliip has collaborated with Snax (currently the other half of German electro-house duo Captain Comatose with Khan), PFFR, contributed new tracks to the companion CDs for issues 2-4 of underground NY arts magazine “K48.” He also compiled and mixed the CDs for issues 3 and 4, slicing up submissions from artists including Matmos, Animal Collective, Gravy Train, Devendra Banhart, Wolf Eyes, Kid 606 and Deerhoof. Also slipped in there somewhere was “Icicles + Spike Sculptuers,” an extremely limited edition CDR that existed only at Other Music and in an “Artforum” Top 10.

Phiiliip also DJs, including a residency for the notorious 'Panty Party', a traveling no-pants debauched fiesta that was a featured hot party in “Rolling Stone,” “Paper,” and “The Face.” Phiiliip has also been written up and shot for “Index,” “Dazed and Confused,” “Another Magazine,” “V,” “SF Weekly,” “LA Weekly,” “Boston Globe,” “I-D,” “New York Times,” “Village Voice,” “Interview,” “L’uomo Vogue,” “Vice,” “Tokion,” “Time Out NY,” and on the cover of “Butt Magazine.”

What brings us up to date is the new solo album, Divided by Lightning which came out in November, with a new band featuring the rhythm section of Black Moustache, in conjunction with an art show he is curating, presented in association with Deitch Projects and John Connelly Presents. The art-show is totally bananas, as is the album.

Its all over the place musically-speaking, in a good way. Consistant throughout is his poetic songwriting (he's been compared to Beck by more than one writer), sampledelia, and explosive, crunchy rhythms. The album features collaborations and remixes with/by Tigra (of L'Trimm) and Avenue D, Khan, Excepter, and Soft Pink Truth. Yummy.
Visit his website to pick up your copy of the album (available via Paypal), and if you're struck curious about where this came from, you can still buy Pet Cancer from Darla. Also, you can visit the Deitch gallery for a few more days, so come to beautiful Williamsburg, Brooklyn and see the show!

[ed: the new Vice magazine rates DbL a 10 - they call Phiiliip "a real weirdo" and recommend it to everyone - excellent!]
