As Long As Its Twist-Off, You Don't Need a Churchkey

Farwell Travail
Sumary - Love is a Flower.

So it seems that Pasadena, California has something of a young scene brewing. Sumary are one of the strongest members to sprout, alongside Stratageme, which I posted last month. Sumary is made up of Jimy Lazaro on lead vocals and guitars, Seeege Bayan on keys and voices, and Danny Lazaro on guitars and background vocals. They are aged 17, 18 and 14 respectively. I don't know what's in the water out here, but the high school kids on the east side seem to be doing some amazing things, musically speaking.

This track comes off of their upcoming Farewell Travail EP, which was recorded last November. I'm trying to avoid critical cliches when describing music these days, so I'll let the music speak for itself. The rest of the EP is much harder, with jazz and blues influences peppered throughout. Eventually you'll be able to pick it up from the band's site. Those of you on the left coast should come check out their show at Bean Town in Sierra Madre on the 14th. They're opening up for Stratageme. I'll be there, so all you crazy blog stalkers can come watch me stroke my beard. Or whatever.

Check out the band's myspace page for more tracks and info.

Dicky is Dumbfounded
Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Toxic Toast
Mighy Mighty Bosstones - 365 Days.

I found out yesterday that Bosstone's lead singer Dicky Barrett will now be hosting the morning drive on my local radio station: Indie 103.1. I think it's going to be called the mighty mighty morning show. I'm not really sure what he's going to be doing on the show, but if his guest appearance on Jonesy's Jukebox was any indication, he'll be giving the traffic report on the 128 in Saugus. Which is fine with me.

Anyway, I have always been a fan of the Bosstones, and in particular Dicky's vocal stylings. It sounds like he must gargle fucking glass or something. I posted two tracks off of Question the Answers, which is probably my favorite album of theirs. It holds up very well despite their ska-core status.

For those of you on the east coast and elsewhere, you can stream indie 103.1 from their website. I will not hesitate to say it's the best commercially-owned (heck! clearchannel-owned) radio station in America today.

also
I can't get enough of the diplomats "built this city" track. That starship loop is damn hot. Worst song status or no. Dip set, and all that.

Comments

I had heard rumours that Indie 103.1 had some affiliations with Clear Channel, but never knew they were CC-owned... are you sure about this?

Anyway, you say they're the best commercially-owned station and I must say, I disagree. Check out San Diego's own FM 94/9 KBZT
and then tell me what you think.

Justin -- that does look like a pretty solid station -- especially with DMC guesting on Friday nights. But you can't beat Steve Jones every weekday, or the commercial-free sundays, the local music and the listener support of indie 103. I mean -- I'm sure they're both great stations, and it's awesome to see them both doing well. The rest of the country should really take notice to what's going on down here in so-cal.

thanks for the heads up.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Bosstones album More Noise and Other Disturbances, because it has the song "They Came To Boston", which was one of the songs of my high school existence. But yeah, Question the Answers is good, especially Toxic Toast. I like the little electric guitar/trombone breakdown.

YAY JIMY! congratulations!
Sumary is the next van halen, and Stratageme is the next... Ozma?? (uhhh, NO!)

I love Jonesey's Jukebox at Indie 103. But just to clarify, they are owned by Entravision (who mostly owns spanish language channels). And Clear Channel just does their advertising and website, but supposedly has nothing to do with their programming.

Rolling Stone article that got me listening

OK - I am three down in you posts today and I am loving everything I hear, One may ask, why I havent come around sooner? - must be the monkeys on my back.

At any rate, the Sumary track has an amazing pace. Takes me back a good bit.

what's this song with a loop from starship?

Posted by: senator john at January 7, 2005 1:31 PM

ah yes. "we built this city". riiight.

Why is he hosting a show on a station outside of Boston? He is not aloud to live anywhere else! Is this his retirement home now that the BTones have passed the torch to the Dropkicks as the official indie band of Boston (not that the B-Tones have been indie since the left TAANG!!, back in the day). I will have to stream this. My favorite album is probably "Devil's Night Out" as it was the first album I ever heard from then (plus, it has the original "Hope I never Lose My Wallet" and when I was a wee lad I did the dorky thing of having Dicky sign my wallet).

Sumary have a stupid name. Misspelled words = bad band names.
