Go Subjects!

Alright, here we go again - more buzz-band goodies for you, with The Subjects as the Rock focus today. The band formed as two teachers and two students at the same high school, where their first show was at a school carnival. Since then, they've recorded a half-dozen or so songs, toured the Midwest and New England, and refined their sound through heavy practice-sessions and New York club shows.
According to their press-release, The Subjects music "attempts to capture both the feeling of honest songwriting and the energy or urban living." Yep (They do have a sense of humor). The Subjects have had media attention from the likes of Spin magazine (they were one of the bands featured in the "Currently Playing in the Spin Offices" section) and Artvoice.
This is their second appearance here on MFR because of the above-mentioned 'refining' of their sound - this song (and the others on their website) was recorded about a month back, on 4-track cassette-tape in their practice space no less, so you're hearing the real deal with them. In my opinion, "Hounds..." is probably the best song they've recorded so far - the slow-song fake-out beginning, the driving guitar- and bass-lines, and the combination of the poppy hooks and slightly psychedelic sounding bridge sum up to being basically perfect.
Their live show is seriously rocking, and they'll likely have a number of new songs for those of you who've had the good fortune to see them already, so do yourself a favor and check out their show, I guarantee it will be worth it. They're playing tomorrow (Thursday) at Lit (2nd Ave btw 5th and 6th St.) for "Vito's Dance Off" (that's Vito from the Rapture, by the way) at 9:45 pm, with The Twelve, New Rags and Tuesday Suits. They're also playing next Wednesday, at Southpaw, and again at Lit the following Friday (the 28th).
Be sure to check their site too, so you can hear the other songs they've recorded - "And So It Seems" is my other new favorite song of their's.
