great face for radio

so music.for-robots just had its television debut. oddly and wonderfully enough, from Sway on MTV's TRL. who woulda thunkit.

however, this isn't because we're smart or funny or because we robots pee oil and eat shrapnel, but because MTV took notice of the Oliver Ignatius track I posted some months ago, and MTV news wanted to do a You Hear It First piece on it:

[MP3] Oliver Ignatius - Mostly Untitled

since then, Oliver has grown beyond his solo work to focus wholeheartedly on his band, the Hysterics (click for their Cornerband page), which features two former Saint Ann's students and another current student (and who contributed instrumentals on his solo work). they're in the process of recording right now this minute, and their early tracks are equally amazing. here's one of the songs featured in the MTV piece:

[MP3] The Hysterics - Uptight Staircase

so that's it. MP3 blogs are on the tele-box now. and with a great deal of brilliance from Oliver, Charlie and the band, and a whole bunch of nerdy looking footage of me. that's how this MP3 blog thing breaks down though - you artists and indie labels are brilliant, and we're the nerds here to give your music a well-deserved boost.

for the full story from MTV news, click here.

great song... i was wondering if you were planing on contacting ppl when their album is out(through the sight or via email) ... if you are then i as, i am sure many others, would like to know how to get one (since i am not sure if it will be hitting the local walmart or not.. lol) .. thanx your site is great keep up the good work

Posted by: kristen at January 20, 2005 05:42 PM

man those kids are feaking good,

Kind of depressing that they can craft better songs than me, and I've been out of highschool for like 8 years.

i am still in utter disbelief

Posted by: damn skippy at January 20, 2005 05:42 PM

we'll provide as much info as we can here - websites and more MP3's from the Hysterics will all be posted on the site as soon as we get 'em.

thanx for the help :)

They're so awesome, I'm going to listen to this over and over, even though I'm not a fan of this type of music!

Posted by: ashley at January 20, 2005 05:45 PM

these guys are so cool! i actually saw them on mtv and the first thing i did was come here to listen to there song!

Posted by: jenny at January 20, 2005 05:50 PM

i saw them on Mtv when i got home from school like 2 hours ago. i feeell in love with them! i heard the story about the science teacher and how the singer refused to sign on without his band members and i think that is awesome. the singer is someone i would like to meet. *wink wink* :p

Posted by: amanda jenn at January 20, 2005 06:26 PM

the whole story's awesome!

Posted by: at January 20, 2005 06:33 PM

dang their great! i would like to know how to download them!

Posted by: matt at January 20, 2005 06:36 PM

As much as I dislike the whole "Oh, I liked them before they were big" elitism thing, I think Amanda Jenn personifies the justification for that feeling.

Posted by: 1justin at January 20, 2005 06:38 PM

matt, links to the songs are back on the main webpage, next to the (huge bold) [MP3] brackets. just in case:

Wow, real good! ehnmmm yup theyre all littles guys its so cute but yah Im 15 too and I saw the band on MTV about an hour ago then I was like okay music.for-robots MUST remember then I forgot it took my 45 minutes searching mtv.com and google.com and everywhere for this band and yah I found em yippee. So yah the band is really awesome and umm Good Luck to them.

Posted by: Aimee at January 20, 2005 06:49 PM

Yah that singer kid is a cutie! haha well they all are real cuties. Im actually listening to em right now. So this site is the bands science teachers? where they from?

Posted by: Aimee at January 20, 2005 06:52 PM

I think that it's kinda awesome that this Oliver kid suddenly has some groupies after being on MTV for five minutes. I'm being sincere! Way to go, Oliver! It's a great song, and I definitely would have posted it if I had it first.

Posted by: Matthew at January 20, 2005 06:57 PM

Great songs and good luck!

Posted by: Riku at January 20, 2005 07:19 PM

hey hysterics i saw your mtv thing your music sounds great so far. keep it up!

Posted by: Kate at January 20, 2005 07:20 PM

I saw them on MTV, and they sound absolutely amazing. I downloaded both of the songs posted on here. I really hope that they get signed and put out a CD soon. Of course, with publicity like MTV who knows how far they can go. They definitely have tons of potential, and being on TRL might have been the boost that the band needed. I can't believe they're only 15! I'm 15, and I could never imagine writing and playing that amazing. Of course, I've never really took the initive. They are way talented for teens my age and I wish them the best of luck!

Posted by: Elizabeth at January 20, 2005 07:24 PM

Hey,
I really love the music. I really like how it sounds sort of indie. I love that kind of stuff! However, I have to admit that I DID see the MTV special. I hate the way MTV brain washes everyone, but I'm not gonna say "I was only watching it because I was bored" or "my cousins sisters best-freinds little sisters grandma's feeder gold fishes baby was over so I HAD to watch it" MTV is like the worst guilty pleasure and I hate how you only go on their to see one thing and BAM you're sucked in for LIFEE! Which is why I guess it was good for this band to be on here. I think I deffinitly woulda liked it more if I had dicovered them myself! Lol. But yeah I think it's tres cool what their doing. I mean I'm 15 and ususaly all the good underground stuff is by like 40 year olds (eg: They Might Be Giants or The Pixies)well...or they're dead (Hendrix an Marley!). Anyway glad to see someone my age is rockin' the house.

I dig your stuff, kick ass..Damn, we're a few months from a single release that has gotten rave reviews from people with labels in the UK and here...It'd be kick ass to go on the road with you guys since we're all so close in age. If i could get a contact from someone that would be even better, you can reach me here. clay@softbase.com and if you'd like we'll be shopping labels in La with our lawyer probably by april.we'd be happy to take yours with us, if it's in fit form. You wrote, "It's telivision debut," but it should be, "Its telivision debut." "It's" is the contraction "it is" while you're looking for the possessive "its." That is all.

Posted by: robot mark at January 22, 2005 12:58 PM

su, I sure hope I'm not smelling obligatory hate for the mainstream - I'm getting that tingly feeling I get when indie kids start hating on things because the rest of the world took notice. if you've been a fan of the site (since way before this), you'll know that we're here to promote music we enjoy, love and want to show support for. the public's reaction is not our concern and is entirely out of our control. and if you're going to tell me you're actually going to waste your energy getting pissed at a hundreds of 15 year olds either liking or crushing on a band, then it's time to take a step back; that's pretty effing jaded.

these tracks followed the same formula as every single other track that's been on this site - we heard it, we liked it, we offered it up. if that mentality all of a sudden doesn't work for you, then you should have either taken us out of your bookmarks, or recognize the double standard that's at work here. anyone is welcome and enouraged to enjoy the music we offer, and if a younger demographic taking an interest in a single artist rubs you the wrong way, that's the fault of only one person.

that said, we'd look wicked cute with some wool costumes and floppy ears.

Posted by: robotic sheep jp at January 22, 2005 02:11 PM

The Hysterics are awesome! 100%! They're the coolest.

Posted by: emma at January 22, 2005 02:19 PM

long time reader, first time writer (lol). Indie elitism be damned - I'm happy that Music for Robots (along with Fluxblog and other mp3 blogs) is getting the kind of publicity it deserves. Hopefully this kind of exposure will help those kids get a decent record deal and make even more masses of disgruntled college students envious of their talent.

Posted by: Alexis at January 22, 2005 02:29 PM

Posted by: Nancy at January 22, 2005 04:50 PM

Yes!

I'm really glad to see we're getting some haters mixed in with the teens and independent music fans, otherwise how would we know that we're pushing things forward?

Posted by: sheep blair at January 22, 2005 04:56 PM

i think the exposure for oliver/hysterics and this blog is excellent. i'm no hater. i hope every fifteen year old goes out and buys the records that influenced oliver. it's amazing -- see his amazon reviews:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A1FELYTQNCSEAI/ref=cm_cr_auth/002-6546967-5155221

Posted by: remember "old skull" on MTV circa 1989 at January 22, 2005 05:26 PM

hey all, i think blair put it best - i'm not really expending energy on hating - i was just reading thru all the comments here and just felt it was pretty gross & gushy so i thought i'd liven things up a bit. plus, since i too agree that formula of "if people ain't pissed off, then yr not moving forward", so i just threw up some tongue in cheek;)

i've been around the music biz in north america and i've seen a lot of close friends' bands rise up thru the stratospheres of hype, and just a mere year (or months) later, they're ghost - no one remembers, eve though during the hype everyone coulda sworn this was "best band ever", "most amazing songs ever", etc. etc.. this includes lots of teenage/young bands who really don't understand how the industry works and get really caught up in whatever hype they're receiving at the time. all i'm sayin is - to the band and the fans - don't let it blind you.

for the record, i have no indie elitist hate - in fact anyone who knows me personally will vouch that it's quite the opposite. i still have much respect for the mfr crew and the site; i'm just getting a little grossed out with the state of mp3blogging these days 'cuz a lot of people seem to be pushing hype music or trying to establish their site as a nexus for the next big thing (mainstream/underground/whatever) or some shit - i'm seeing a lot of the same music that almost everyone already knows about because they get exposure in other media. or else, i'm seeing music that the intent of the mp3blogger sharing it is to make it the next big thing... instead of just sharing music that they like and giving props where props is due.

the short-term hype may not be all that its cracked out to be in the long-run. is all i'm sayin. keep it real. let's get away from finding the next big thing, and get back to the music. is all i'm sayin;

peace, su.

p.s. NO JIVE IN 2005!

Posted by: su at January 23, 2005 12:29 PM

you are all teh secks, good luck getting where you want to go with your band! (not that you need it now! you've apparently got plenty of screaming fangirls ^-^)

Oddly enough, I found out about this site from MTV. I was flipping through the channels when I heard a clip of the song (brought to my attention by Sway) .. not only do I think that these kids are extremely talented, but I'm the same age as them, and for as long as I've tried to write songs like this.. it's never been quite as.. well.. good. Plus, Olivers kind of hot and his vocals are unique as hell. I enjoy it. They definitely have potential and it's awesome to see MTV and other people take such interest in younger aspiring artists. So thanks, I guess, for just.. letting this be out there.

Posted by: Lauren at January 23, 2005 09:14 PM

Hey,
Question: It's compleatly obvious that Hysterics have tons of people wanting them to go on tour or make an album or get signed, but would do the guys prefer to stay sort of underground or go big?
'eh just wondering,
-Belle

Posted by: Belle at January 23, 2005 10:20 PM

Alright...so i feel like a complete moron admitting that i heard of the hysterics on MTV just like everyone else. Of course i enjoy MTV, it's just sad that I have to be 1 of dozens of kids to come here because they saw it on MTV. But anyways...i came to this site b/c i really do enjoy the music that these guys are making. Pretty impressive. I mean...the lead singer, Oliver? yes, Oliver...he does NOT sound like he's 15, and i'm officially of fan of the hysterics. Hopefully you'll keep posting their music and anything else that would be of interest to new fans.

Posted by: Brittany at January 23, 2005 10:25 PM

I really liked your music...Its not hard to believe that you guys are 15 , musiccians are getting younger & younger these days. It is impressive though they dont just use power cords like most of the music today. Its 9:30 pm and I just found out about this band. and I liked uptight staircase I like there band name to ,Its probably not wat they meant by there name but I dont think that they have a great radio face there not ugly.

Most of the people that have heard you guys off of mtv sound like they dont know what they are talking about or just think you are cute. Well anyway you guys have talent and sound very much like Elliott Smith which isnt easily done. Keep up the good work. I also heard of this site off of mtv by chance. I dont watch mtv much let alone tv, and im suprised i havent heard of this site before.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing! When I heard that you guys are my younger brother's age I was shocked even more. With the recent trends in music, I had lost all faith in the youth of America and their taste in music and such. You guys have restored my faith and I cannot wait for more music!

This music is awesome. It's like watching the o.c. When I say this, I mean it in a good way. It has nothing to do with the suckiness of that damn show. Anyway...I love the, they are so awesome. I want their cd, i wonder if they have a website? Time to go google!

Hey i saw the band on TRL they sounded awesome keep us posted on them

Posted by: at January 25, 2005 09:35 PM

On the "teenybopper" girl--if being 15-16, and discovering a semi-local band via MTV, and being attracted the sounds, the look, and everything overall--makes me "just another teen girl", so be it-- what's the differentiation between being a "true music fan" and just happening to be young & female? I know where you all are coming from, but I see some gender stereotyping going on here. I for one feel it vital to support local bands-- if we don't, who will? I don't think a band has "sold out" by appearing on MTV and revealing itself to a wider audience. If the band's good, that's it, whether it be for music or looks, and by the way, Hysterics, This stuff is terrific, I'm really feeling the demos. I'm fifteen, and I think you guys sound pretty sweet so far, definitely up-and-coming talents. This kind of thing warms my heart.....

Posted by: Aimee at January 25, 2005 10:05 PM

hi we just heard you guys and we think you are really great. but the best part is that we are in a study and jeff the drummer who is suddenly the stallion in teenage girls dreams (wild pony in the wind!?!) is right here in research class.
Dylan: ooo nell maybe we should get his autograph
Nell: omigod are you kidding me i already have his autograph...and his picture (class picture) on my bed. I masterbate to it cuz he's my wild pony man

yo yo yo. teenie boppers are the kewl-est. to the max man. i was reading some of these comments and it made me quite sad. i think some people are so oblivious to what bands are all about. Being "hott" has nothing to do with good music kids. its simply that, about the music. music wise i'm into so many effing good bands (my opinion) ...tbs,tsl,ten,modest mouse(old stuff), mars volta, death cab, daphne loves derby, steel train, basically anything on drive thru records, especially allister, ummm dylan, ramones, floyd, hendrix, damien rice, copeland, dang..the list goes on. anyway i

okay man, that just cut me off *CRYS* whateves. i think all it said was that i love your mom. *heck yes* sorry for that. i really am sick of people quoting napoleon at my school, although it is an alright movie. anyone see wet hot american summer? GREAT/FUNNY movie. check it out compadre. oh em gee. i love rufio and crap. lates to all the peeps in the world. have you ever had those marshmellow peeps? i used to eat those when i was 15, not listen to bands. eat peeps is basically what i did. every moment of the day. and then i got allergic to marshmellows. lalalallal that was probably a lie. i have them at easter time though.

Anyway, The Beatles didn't even start writing their own songs until after they made it big...you guys...you can go really far. Just keep developing all your stuff...and don't get caught up in being popular so that you lose who you are.
Anyway, I wish I could be in a band! If you ever need a clarinet player...here's the only way to contact me!

Posted by: kelsey at March 14, 2005 04:21 PM

You guys totally rock. I don't mean that in the valley girl, giggle, kind of way. I am truely sincrere about my compliment. You guys , The Hysterics, are somewhat in comparison with The Beatles and T-rex. (For those of you who don't know who they are I seriously suggest that you broaded your music knowledge.) I just wanted to let you guys know I enjoy the fact that you have embraced your musical talent and if I were to see your CD in a store I would probably buy it before I thought about buying any CD from my ever on going list, that is how great you sound. SO PLEASE, PLEASE keep us posted with anything new development that goes on with the band!

Posted by: Natasha at March 14, 2005 08:14 PM

Oh my gosh, these guys are so awesome! I usually hate newer bands, because usually their music is crap. I was listening to the radio one morning, and I had MTV on low, and I usually can't listen to both at once, and i don't listen to the TV.

I tell ya, I wasn't paying attention... But I heard Oliver's voice, and I cranked up the TV! I was only sorry they didn't put the whole song on TV. I've now put it in my iTunes, and saved it to my HardDrive! I can't wait for the guys to release a CD or come to VA for a gig. I love 'The Hysterics'! Keep it up, guys!

Wow, they rock! I would really love to hear some more tracks. I love these guys

I think they have a great sound and go to the top. I searched "The Hysterics" on itunes the otherday and Uptight Staircase is on the Drak & Josh Soundtrack. I looked it up and its a show on Nickelodeon. I thought that people might want to know this peice of information.

I'm amazed at the power of the "word of mouth" concept!! I heard about this "kick ass" band through a friend of a friend and decided to check it out. Now I'M the friend of a friend! I'm telling as many ppl as possible about the band.

I'm Waiting for an album! And Congrats.

Ok, I NEVER watch MTV. EVER. I'm too envelopped in writing songs of my own or listening to my other music, which never gets public air time. Then one night, while tragically browsing stations for something to entertain my decaying mind for a few measly hours before going to bed, I stumble across Oliver singing away at Mostly Untitled..it sounded like The Shins meets the Beatles minus the fame and label. I couldn't not watch. These guys are the same age as me and I actually love them. I would buy an album of this. I buy albums as often as I watch MTV.

I can't help but notice....you guys are amazing.

Wicked awesome. I'm so lucky I caught MTV today. These guys better become famouse. They got too much talent to waste. Really wicked is that they're only 15. They're cute too...which you know....kinda helps.

There is a new appointment with acoustic music in Williamsburg, presented by Sousalves: it's called Songwriters from Hell 2 (scary!!!). It's an amalgamation of NYC's core, not your flavor of the week, but artists who thrive on documenting life here as we know it, day after week after month after year... on Sat, Jul 22nd @ the Blu Lounge in Williamsburg, 8pm. We'll have chapters by: Steve Bag and Erika Simonian of the Sprinkle Genies, Josh Westfal from your 33 Black Angels, Lisa McHenry who writes cute-as-a-button pop, the Americana of the Benjamin Cartel. Sousalves makes your tomorrow progressive, Xtina rocks you into space, Eric Toast brings it on home, and the WMDs will blow you up! Myspace them and you'll be happy to bring them into yourspace ! See you tonight!!
