So Totally... Dirty South!

from left field
"Totally In Love" by Avenue D and Phiiliip + "CockRock" by Avenue D and Reggie

Okay, so you may know Avenue D - that's Debbie D and Daphne D - from their first big song, "Slut?" - it got played in all the trashiest clubs a year or so ago. You may know them from their other big song "2D2F," (which I posted way back when), that appeared on Erlend Øye's near-perfect DJ Kicks mix-cd , sandwiched between Alan Braxe and The Rapture.

Forget what you know, because like any great band should, they're totally evolving. "Totally In Love" takes the D into new territory, both in lyrical content and sonically too, where the music comes close to unbelievably catchy, with background vocals and production duties fulfilled by Phiiliip. On the flipside, "CockRock" is a new dirty-south anthem, all glittery synths, drum-machine beats and filth spewed from all three involved.

All this from a band raised on 2 Live Crew, Cyndi Lauper, Jem and the Holograms and CRASS - seriously, if it sounds like they're all over the place with influences, when you see them perform, it makes sense. Speaking of which, they've played all over NYC, including CBGB's, the Cock, Don Hill's, Piano’s, Siberia, Deitch, the Warsaw and Stinger Bar. They've also hit clubs all over the US (Chicago, Charlotte NC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, Hawaii, Texas, Colorado, and their hometown, Miami) and around the globe, including Brazil, Amsterdam, Rome, Ibiza, and many visits to London and Germany (international readers, keep your eyes peeled if you live in Australia, New Zeland or Japan...).

Also worth noting, when they rocked at a gay marriage-rights rally in Washington D.C., they made major eyes at Henry Rollins (the photo of him in an Avenue D t-shirt is totally priceless).

You can buy their eight song Bootleg CD on their website, or at finer independant retail outlets around the US, because they're not on any label - totally indie love here! Oh, yeah, the inside scoop is that these two songs are part of a mini album series they're working on. The final series will be four or five EPs, to be released over the few months. Cock rock is from the America EP (prolly not the final title) and "Totally..." is from the Phiiliip and Avenue D EP, which is almost finished.

Happy weekend!

PS: for those of you who missed the Subjects show last night, they were really good - played a bunch of new songs too... dang. Be sure to check their shows next week at South Paw (Wednesday) and Lit (Friday)!

Wow, that's bad. And not in a good way.

I sure can hear 2live in there. They were bad too.

It will be nice when one day we can have good lewd, "dirty", sex music sung well to good tunes.

Ken, you don't like 2Live Crew? What?
Should be pretty obvious that you wouldn't "get" Avenue D then... Too bad.

Does anyone recognize the backround chorus taken from the classic tv show "Perfect Strangers" theme. Or is that just me?

Sorry Blair - I know its your girl's band and all, but ask her and Deb to get back in touch with Larry or Salinger or someone, because these tracks just aren't that hot.

Sorry that was vague. Just let me know if you can acknowledge the part in "Totally In Love" when the lines..."and if forever never happens.." There clearly useing the theme from that show. Maybe you've never seen the show or heard of it but i find quite funny.
