hybrid to heaven

there are certain moments when two things, equally excellent in their own right, are brought together in a union that completely distorts the notion of what was taken as a benchmark for awesomeness prior. like when David Bowie and Iman made a baby that is undoubtedly the most beautiful person on eart, or when Beyonce and Jay-Z humped out Crazy in luv as the most fedunkulous summer jam of all time, or the sick genius that came up with Tostitos with lime.

so it's equally bowel-loosening to me that two labelmates who made 2 of my absolute favorite albums released in 2002 got together, went into a room, and squirted out a musical lovechild that I can't wait to buy:

Themselves + the Notwist = 13+God.

and it's every bit as good as I wanted it to be. the album is slated for an April release, but here's a taste of the beauty:

13+God - Men of Station

I'm completely floored by both the songs I've heard from the upcoming 10-track release, but this one gives a better taste for how the subtle, delicate and overwhelming melodic production and instrumental styles of the Notwist are blended with Doseone & Jel's more punchy, electronic touch. the song takes you through it at a very relaxed pace that forces you to enjoy all it's got, like a really chewy candy that makes you get all the flavor out before swallowing. the production style on the other material I've heard is as calmly paced, but highlights Doseone's vocal stylings (which for people that love to hate his voice, are extremely melodic and incorporate his remarkable cadence into the intrumentals this time around) with more Notwist-y sounds enveloping them.

highly, highly recommended. April 26th, y'all.

Comments

Boy, I sure am glad that Doseone didn't pick up the mic on this track. It was pretty good as a result.

It's incredibly charitable to refer to Doseone's cadence as "remarkable" ... A better word would be.. "awful." And not "awful" as in "awe-inspiring" but "awful" as in "terrible."

For the love of god, Doseone, if you're out there. Please. Never, ever, ever pick up a mic again. Please. Please.

yeah yeah, we all know where you stand. but I'll have you know I put up the more Notwist-ish track with you in mind, so pthttptptphthtpthhh.

did this guy steal your girlfriend once or something? you've really got it in for him. or is it the vocal style (do you hate DasEFX and Mummy Fortuna's Theater Co. as much too?) that rubs you the wrong way?

Wow. This is beautiful! Though they've been recommended to me before, I've not yet heard Notwist. Sounds like I'm gonna have to track some of their stuff down.

Doseone and Jel can do no wrong in my book. I've not heard a daft release from either of them yet. Can't wait till April 26th so that I can get this :)

no joke - the last Notwist album was one of the best electronique-rock LP's I've ever heard, and their live show totally blew me away. you can buy the album from Insound [here].

AWWWW, JP!! That is seriously super duper sweet!

Thank you for not subjecting me to Doseone on the mic. :) :) :)

To answer your question.. I hadn't really considered why I dislike Doseone so much, but after some contemplation I've think I've got it.

So, you know sometimes when you're on high powered mind-bending drugs and your brain starts thinking in an endless monologue of mumbled half-words which make no sense but you TRY TO MAKE SENSE OF THEM ANYWAY? My nonsense monologue sounds almost exactly like Doseone.

I disagree, also, that Doseone's vocal stylings bear much of a resemblance to DasEFX. DasEFX may rhyme fast and slur words together, but they also change the flow to make certain words pop out of the stream. For example, punchlines get that extra OOMPH. This same technique is used by EVERY OTHER RAPPER ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET, which makes me think that maybe it's just part of being a good rapper.

Maybe there's some top secret Doseone record out there where dude actually VARIES HIS CADENCE or PUNCTUATES DIFFERENT WORDS AND PHRASES DIFFERENTLY but everything I've heard is an endless stream of monotonous mumbley glossolalia. He might be saying something terribly interesting, but I can't pick it out from the background noise which passes for his flow.

I'm not like, on a mission from god against him, so if there's anything that matches the above criteria, please feel free to post it or mail me (nuclearbeef A@T gmail dot dot dot dot dot dot com) so I can bask in the wonder and glory that is teh Doseone. ;)

interesting. some devil's advocacy:

-I agree that most of his lyrics are nonsense. pure gibberish. buth the same way you can't criticize scatting in jazz for being non-lyrical, I'd say that despite his intents, if you ignore any english meanings your brain is trying to assign to the "words" and just take in his voice as part of the intrumentation, it's actually quite pleasing. but yeah, homeslice does some crazy drugs or just is permanently in the zone. but hey, half of Soul Coughing's lyrics were complete drug-induced gibberish, and they're my favorite band of all time, so maybe I'm just biased.

-with regards to the flow and cadence, I still maintain that spitting out that many syllables with that even consistency in tone and pace is something that would make anyone a better rapper, but is something very few emcees can pull off. think about how often you hear it; DasEFX, Busta Rhymes (back in the day), and a fistfull of underground emcees at best. I agree that it's something that is part of being an emcee, and is a skill that would make any emcee better, but is something few can actually do.

so all in all, I'm not advocating for any glory, or for that matter any meaning. alls I'm saying is the dude can add some aurally pleasing elements to a track. if I actually read or tried to break open his lyrics, I'd probably be irate too :)

Right know I am at work, so I don't have the time to listen to this song, but The Notwist is one of my favourite bands.

But The Notwist is only part of a hughe "collective" from a little town in the south of Germany. I have a collection of links to free MP3s of most of the related bands. Download them here:

Holy shit, I can't stop listening to this song. I love this shit.

Hey JP, thanks for helping me understand more about my personal relationship with Doseone. I'll probably give him another shot one of these days, and I do acknowledge that what he does isn't easy.. it's just not the sort of thing I tend to enjoy in vocals. :)

Dear Darwin & JP,

I think that thanks to you I finally got why I like Doseone : my english is simply not good enough (that's because I'm french and I only studied english for like ... hum ... 15 years) to understand what he's saying and I'm actually just taking his words as a part of the instrumentation ...

What I meant is : thanks for this track - it's awfully good ; so good I wrote a piece on my blog on Notwist & Doseone ... (but it's in french)

to the f**khead who just badmouthed doseone, you obviously have no taste for real music. true poetry is only seen by those who understand it. you obviously haven't put enough thought into what you're listening to. notwist lyrics are good, but they're not half as deep as the poetry and insight that comes out of dose's mouth every single time he speaks. you should inform yourself more about something before you chose to call it aweful. have a nice day

P.S. I've heard the full album. The second track on the single "Soft Atlas" is the best song on the whole album. guess what. it's entirely doseone. if you don't like this song, you sould be shot and killed. not only are the lyrics deep, but dose makes it sound beautiful like no one else could.

----
a vision:
             your ghost blowing up globes.
tightening them off with an x-axis-esque c-clamp,
Then Setting them down through the clouds
             onto empty department store shelves.
where they sit facing all sorts of islands
             out toward dead wee-hour isles.

has the earth come loose from its galactic neck beneath
you. Let go from the space surround it

              cut off above the clouds
dropped down done to the sun system's floor
crooked pearl of the one universe
cleaved, fell rolling toward a corner of the cosmos
in the blacked and quiet of come time

"and you are all lamb, for this."

Spring is at your back again
this time rare with your clarity...
while patches of you thought whole
                           had turned up still.
made a tar of your woe
                           and flesh there in

                           Have you gone half dead...

Yet... yet have you to let the worst most be
as if it were atlas to your world of cope

And no one is out there scared
you'd set your eyes off on the ceiling
                           in the dark
think of a song or maybe breasts
                           or missing body parts

"without a universal law there is no gravity
without a gravity there is no atmosphere
without an atmosphere there is no chance at life
and with no chance at life...I don't exist."

(p/s please =darwin, for the love of whoever, if you're out there. just never, ever, ever, touch a keyboard again. please. there's so much else to do at home.)

Doseone, human, amazing, chills on my spine, someday I will walk into a room and meet this floating body of organs and be more than content.
I make music, from Cincinnati, like Dose, damn... its just amazing.
