Teenage Dream
I know that right now I might as well be a joke straight out of Chunklet but I don't really care. I'm clutching a precious little package of self-indulgent indie rock candy.
Colin Meloy-I Changed My Plea to Guilty
Colin Meloy-Sister I'm a Poet
Colin Meloy--the voice of The Decemberists is currently on a brief solo tour. For the tour, he did what so many of us dream we could do--put out an EP of covers of one of his favorite artists. He called his EP a "teenage dream" and there's only 1000 of these out there. You gotta admit it's a pretty damn cool thing to be able to do. Still, Colin Meloy covering the elusive one, and all the kids loving it, is pretty much the definition of whatever the opposite of irony is. To some, I'm sure it borders on parody--hence the Chunklet reference (which you should be reading anyway).
But the concept is great--along the same vein, isn't everyone digging the Seu Jorge acoustic covers of Bowie from The Life Aquatic? I've heard some debate about the film's merits, but you have to love those tunes.
Meloy played both these songs at his show in D.C. on Friday, along with some great solo versions of Decemberists songs. I wish more artists could do this. It's like being able to go back in time to when you first discovered a great band before anyone else knew who they were.
