Build something on that ground

Well, The Big Ticket already beat me to this post, which is a shame because he wrote exactly what I was going to write. So I won't waste the time of people who read both blogs, but I wanted to write about how awesome KCMP is. This Minneapolis radio station premiered last month to a lot of buzz because 1) we don't have much else to get excited about during our sub-zero January, and 2) this city is seriously lacking in good radio. True, there's Radio K, which is good and all, but it doesn't even broadcast at night. KCMP (which has the unfortunate name of The Current) has a ridiculously varied mix of music - just check out the playlist from the last six hours - and this was their first song, at 9 a.m. on Jan. 24:
Say Shh - Atmosphere
I hadn't actually heard Atmosphere before, and I'm still not too familiar with them, but I loved this song when I first heard it. A bonus track from their most recent disc Seven's Travels, "Say Shh" is a great tribute to living in the midwest. It celebrates Minnesota's lack of pretentious celebrities, lack of syringes on playgrounds, and dubs the state as a place where "you can drink tap water and breathe the air." If "there's only one store in your town that sells 12-inches" and people laugh about where you live, says Slug, say ... well, you know.
Though I haven't heard the rest of Seven's Travels, I've heard some mediocre things about Atmosphere (including this typically snarky but insightful Pitchfork review). I dunno, I love this track; Minneapolis is both an underdog and a hidden gem, and "Say Shh" perfectly captures this. Plus, it's hilarious.
You can pick up Seven's Travels from Insound here, or get "Say Shh" from iTunes here (it's the second half of the track "Always Coming Back Home To You").
