Slo-burn Friday

grindin
"Departures" by Closer Musik

So, I don't know about all of you, but my week has been a rough one. I've had this slow-burn feeling in my head pretty much all week, and since I usually post techno of some sort on Fridays, this here song is my answer to that.

Closer Musik, aka Dirk Leyers and Matias Aguayo, make beautiful music together and have put out a couple successful singles before releasing the album that this song comes off of, After Love. It is all analog warmth and buzzy synths, some of the songs have vocals, and it ranges in tempo from druggy slow songs to fiercely churning tech stormers. I went with this particular song because its got this feel and resonance that's just impossible to beat - the bass, the synth pads and the perfect little hi-hats. Its one of those songs that sent chills down my spine the first time I put it on - rack up another big win for Kompakt!

Actually, I shouldn't talk about Closer Musik in the present-tense, because this album is actually a couple of years old, and apparently the duo have broken up. The Kompakt site says:

Dirk Leyers, one member of CLOSER MUSIK, continues the spirit and comes up with his first solo release after the splitting up. Most beautiful and minimal music with this certain deep and tragic something.

I find this a bit of a bummer, but the samples of Dirk's songs (put out a couple of weeks back as Kompakts' 114th release, if you're counting) do sound pretty awesome. I highly reccomend you check out After Love (buy it from the label or my friends at Forced Exposure) - its well worth the price.

PS: My thoughts go out to Nick 'krg' Kilroy's friends and family - RIP - the blogging community will certainly miss your contributions.

PPS: Congrats to the 'fork for winning the Plug award for best music website of the year. It only took them 5 times as many staff-members and advertising money to beat us! ;)
