We Shouldn't Have to Say That We Told You So

Marxy is a Beach Boys-obsessed, NES-playing japanophile from Florida, currently living in Tokyo. It's hard to pick a track from his mini-LP Kyoshu Nostalgia (which translates to "Nostalgia Nostalgia"), since each song is different, and only a handful break the two-minute barrier. You can get an idea of what it's like from the last 10 seconds of this track, which runs from nintendo samples to choral pop melodies to static. There's also a nice sing-along section in the middle. This is some saccharine stuff, so don't be mistaken.
There isn't a lot of meat to the album, which runs at a lean 19 minutes. Yet, it definitely has its moments, and I'm certainly curious to see what Marxy comes up with in the future. I don't know if this can be classified as j-pop -- I mean, it is pop and it was recorded in Japan, so it might be included on a technicality.
Anyway, Marxy is also the first signee to Beekeeper Records, which is run by Matt LeMay and Nick Sylvester, who you may recognize as writers for Pitchfork Media. I will commend them on some solid promotional packaging -- this is the nicest looking cd I've received in quite some time. Marxy also seems to be a nice way to start out. This mini lp is certainly good. The sound is a little young, but it's forward thinking in its nostalgia (if that makes sense). I think they'll only get better. You can purchase the mini-LP directly from beekeeper.
