It's A Brand New Day

Tarwater
Tarwater - Unseen in the Disco.

Tarwater (who's website www.tarwater.de isn't up yet) hail from Germany, where they spent several years cranking out records for Kitty-Yo. Their latest release, The Needle Was Traveling will be the band's first on Morr Music, and shows a slightly stronger sound from the boys. You can still tell that they come from Berlin, with subtle flashes of techno, a thin veneer of rock sleeve, and even a reverbed piano sample that reminds me of early house.

The entire album is very good, and comes highly recommended. It's a brooding, meditative thing that isn't quite a dance album, but isn't quite the chill-out scene either. It's definitely on its own, and Ronald Lippok and Bernd Jestram have really created an awesome album. Their latest will hit the states on March 12. It should be available in your local indie store, as well as online at bleep or through iTunes.

Emperor X
Emperor X - Sfearion

Emperor X is Chad Matheny, who has been quietly releasing insane jams on discos mariscos for the last few years. His music is basically pop, not too far off from what folks like Modest Mouse or Casiotone for the Painfully Alone are doing. It's fast, off-kilter stuff that's surprisingly good. He seems like a total nut to me, which is a good thing. In this genre it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff, but I think there's enough different and exciting about this kid to warrant repeat listens.

This track comes from the upcoming and excellent Central Hug / Friendarmy / Fractaldunes [And The Dreams That Resulted] album. I'm not sure of the release date, but I'm positive you'll be able to buy it from our good friends at insound, where you can buy his back catalogue. There's more song links at his site as well, so it's worth checking out.

Thanks Mark! I'm soooooooo happy that Tarwater has new stuff coming out. All their previous albums are highly recommended as well. Get wise, you hipsters!

P.S. The Bluffs rule!

how can you mention modest mouse and cftpa in the same sentence?!

hey chad matheny, nice to meet you! I like your music.
I agree with The 1-2-3-4, that 'minaret' tune I listen at least once a day...The bluffs, so good... I think of them inside my head as something like a nervous and white tv on the radio but different. blip blip.

well, I feel that some of Emperor X's work sounds like early modest mouse. Some of his stuff also sounds like CFTPA, in that bedroom/emotional/crazy guy sense. I know it's kind of a stretch, but it made sense to me.

oh well.

Emperor Xs hyperactive rhythm + lush backdrop reminds me obliquely of Manitoba (Caribou, whatever), with an early 90s indie vocal approach.

The Tarwater track struck me at first as Whigs/Twilight Singers melody meets Morr Music, the electronic record Dulli always wanted to make, but it doesn't hold up past the first few bars. Still, know what I'm talking about?

hey, thanks for posting some empx stuff!! my friends and i have been loving chad and his music for a while, and its high time he got some credit (his last nyc show involved playing to 6 people in an nyu dorm room). the new album is, indeed, gorgeous.

Both tracks are wonderful, especially the Tarwater. Morr seemingly does no wrong. Emperor X has grown on me, though I was initially turned off because his voice sounds identical to Doug Martsch

I love the modest mouse feel to emperor x's music, I'm definatly going to be looking for the cd when it comes out. Thanks
