Not to be outdone

Now, generally speaking I try to avoid posting a band that another blog has just posted, but since this is so good I can't resist. Metronomy is Joseph Mount, a former rock drummer who's rocky past relationships (read breakups of band and lady-friend variety) lead him to learning to compose electronic music on a computer. He started out in Devon and made his way to Brighton - for those of you who know anything about English geography, and what the British think of travelling "long distances" you know that this move was a big enough one to make a huge difference in this guy's life.
His compositions on his new album, Pip Paine (Pay Back The £5000 You Owe), really shine - he uses video-game sounds (which many of us robots here are total suckers for), drum machines, accordians, synths and vocals to such great effect, that after the first time I listened to the whole album, I put it back to track 1 to listen to it again. Running the gamut from crazy-fast to chilled out tempos, the album is solid, with nods to Prefuse 73, Autechre, Aphex, DMX Krew, old school electro, Nintendo and C-64 too. Really good stuff.
This track in particular really got stuck in my head after a few listens - it sounds almost like a new rave song of some kind - like it would be played at a rave, back in the day, but on another planet or something. Unbelievably catchy, and the layering of tracks really gets to a point where you almost can't take it anymore. At that point the he breaks it back down, only to have it bounce right back to life.
You can buy the CD from his label, Holiphonic, and you can get in touch with either the band The Foodgroups, who he does live shows with, or his manager, from the contact page. Do so, and maybe they'll roll through your town.
