Save me from the flames

leaning on a wall of sound
"Don't Save Us From The Flames" by M83

Ok, so I've made a point of championing this band for a while now, and I'm back with more of their amazing work. M83 is essentially the creative work of one man, Anthony Gonzalez, a resident of Antibes, France. On their previous two albums, Gonzales also worked with Nicolas Fromageau, but for the new album, Before The Dawn Heals Us (released on the amazing French label, Gooom), the two have split to do their own thing, and M83 sees Gonzales going it alone (albeit with a handful of other musicians to flesh out some of the parts).

Their earliest work took on more a pastoral and sometimes ambient sound, with the use of silence playing a large part of their sound. Their second album, Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts, which was actually the first time I heard them, took on a much larger sound, dominated by massive synthesizers washing over the songs. On the new album, the quiet parts are still there, as are the synths, but most often the huge sound comes from guitars. There is also much more use of vocal parts, sung by Gonzales himself, as well as Lisa Papineau, spoken word parts by Kate Moran, and a children's choir (?!?). The layering of synths and guitars is sometims so massive, I'm surprised my stereo can handle the sound.

This song comes from the first single from the album, which also features a non-album track, and two absolutely genius remixes, courtesey of two MFR favorites, Boom Bip and Superpitcher. There's a video for the song, which you can watch here (it is included on the CD-single as well). The song is really a piece of work, just so huge sounding, and the lyrics are super-creepy (as are many of the songs on the album, like "Car Chase Terror" - very dark stuff). I highly reccomend playing this as loud as you can, because the effect of the layers upon layers of guitar and synths is somewhat mind-blowing.

I really can't reccomend the album enough, so pick up Let The Dawn Heal Us from our friends at Insound here - also check out the previous album, available here.

To top it all off, they're doing a huge US tour - this is one of the main reasons I decided to post this today, in the hopes of helping get people to see them - I've already got tickets for the April 14th show at the Bowery Ballroom, where they'll be supported by another MFR favorite, Ulrich Schnauss. If you like M83, I absolutely reccomend you check them out if they roll through your city - the tour is fairly extensive, with stops in Boston, New York, DC, Philadelphia, Montreal, Toronto, Columbus, Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, San Fran and LA. Expect the live show to be unreal.

Yeah, this is my hands-down album of the year so far. I've been listening to it since Christmas Eve and it hasn't lost any of its appeal yet.

I also heard that M83 are trying to get their first album re-released this year, since it's so hard to come by.

m83 has such an amazing, massive sound - i'm wondering if we can expect some scene of 4AD style ambience revival.

i agree with su, thought this new record was really disappointing-- pointless vocal samples, bland singing, etc. i love their first one though.

i agree with you that this album is incredible, and i'd even go so far as to say it's a step up from the last album. just something about it is more engaging... when i listen to Dead Cities, i imagine myself sitting still and gazing at a massive sonic landscape (and i do mean massive, layer me up to high heaven!), but with Before The Dawn Heals Us, i'm more involved, more afraid, more expectant, like i'm in the car chase...
i will see the live show if it's the last thing i do. and how difficult do you think it would be to get them to play at a college a few hours north of NYC?

just a heads up, I saw them last tour and it was actually very tedious live, sort of a one-note thing. wore thin after about 30 minutes. just fyi

M83 have the unfortunate distinction of being one of those bands who've been compared to My Bloody Valentine. This tends to be the kiss of death; such a comparison usually means someone is trying too hard (i.e. Guitar) to SOUND like MBV. Such isn't entirely the case with M83 -- even with the interesting rhyme between the (shortened) band names. Vee - three, three - vee. Get it?

Anyway, much like their French brethren Air, M83 albums tend to make an initial impact on their target audience and then fade quietly as the sound dates itself. OK, this is a bit of critical stretch - some of the music remains timely - but a valid criticism. Before The Dawn Heals us is best when it's wearing it's Kevin Shields aspirations openly on it's sleeve. Save Me From The Flames is a great song, and on the 12", Superpitcher succeeds in creating a remix that isn't anywhere near as frustratingly ALMOST-good as his usual stuff.

From it's fairly strong opening, M83's latest slides into balladic yawn-inducing synth washes and over-long ambient bliss-outs. I said of their previous album that the best thing about the band was their website. This still stands. The site (much like the music) hasn't been updated in a couple years, aside from content additions. Go check it out.

Damnit, maybe I should move to France and start smoking dope again so I can get back into this stuff.

For a highly recommended alternative to M83, check out Khonnor. Amazing, and innovative.

Do you pronounce it

"M-83", or
"M8 (like 'mate')-3", or
"M-8-3"

They sound nothing like MBV what are you retarded? You obviously have no technical knowledge of music. The difference between FM/subtractive synthesis and electric bloody guitars is pretty significant...

Someone shows up two years later to start talking shit? How civil. Regardless, in spite of synths vs. guitars, M83 do have a sound similar to My Bloody Valentine, anonymous rapscallion.
