Pass the Scooby Snacks, it's Saturday morning

Most of my friends here know that on Saturday mornings I love to waste time sleeping late and then watching the Hindi films on WYBE in Philly as I eat my breakfast. Today I really wanted to request a song during their AVS Total Request hour, mainly because I thought it would be hilarious to see my name at the bottom of the screen while the song played. Anyway, while searching for the song name from a movie I had seen recently I found this guy’s site: http://www.iespana.es/i2fs/

I2FS is a blog dedicated to unraveling the source material in many popular Indian film songs, so many of which have taken ‘inspiration’ from other popular sources and vice-versa. One recent notable post from March 11th talked about The Black Eyed Peas’ 2003 release Elephunk that apparently originally contained the track Elephunk Theme, sampling heavily from another Tamil song. I really don’t know much more about this or BEP’s album as I lost interest in them sometime around 2000.

Anyway head on over to I2FS to check the tracks; I’m not going to link directly to the songs. Unfortunately they’re in RealAudio format. Maybe Saleem will weigh in?

hey ya, i've been in india for the past year and i'm totally saturated with bollywood remixes hindi pop. it's interesting to note the parallels between desi rip-offs and jamaican dub culture - both tend to treat melodies as a pure folk form, as if any melody released into the world immediately becomes public property.

for a while i was posting the best of 70s and 80s bollywood disco funk that i could find but it never seems to be quite enough! maybe i'll dig up some more soon.

Awsome fricking awsome...I'd love to find more Hindi music and movies! I just can't get enough! I just saw Bride and Predjudice in theaters...a little too hollywood not enough bollywood. But deffinitly funny, I was suprised when I found out it was a musical! I've also been looking for Monsoon Wedding but Colorado sucks...

Yo, it took me a long time to get to a computer w/ Realplayer in a location I could listen to music.

Rad find, yo. I wish the samplers and the sampled could find ways to get a long. Maybe there should be a rule that during a song you have to give a quick shout out to whoever you sampled.

That would increase record sales all around, maybe revive old titles, too. Thoughts?
