I'm On the List, So Don't Take the Piss

Kano - Typical Me
Kano - Typical Me.

He lands a cover shot on The Fader, he gets some awards, and he lands a track on Flux... what else does Kano need to conquer America? Well, apart from an American label to distribute his stuff, how about a beat based around a dirty metal riff and laced with regular-guy rants, landing him somewhere near Mike Skinner, Eminem and Nas, lyrically speaking. Kano has loads of promise, and could easily take the reigns of the British hip hop scene.

His newest single has enough cock-sure swagger that kids like 50 should take notice. It might not have the bounciest club beat you ever heard, but it'll do in a pinch and you can sure as shit drive to it. You can pick up a couple import singles from Amazon. Try the Typical Me Single Version 1, or the beefier, remix-heavy Single Version 2. Recommended. And we'll keep you posted on label developments, since it's only a matter a time before he's distributed locally.

"Grime" is a vapor trend. How is this any different from hip-hop? The accent, wot?

Here's a handy test readers can apply at home. Upon hearing someone cited as a "grime" artist, listen to their song and imagine that instead of their English accent, the rapper sounds like a nerd from Halifax, Nova Scotia. If the rapper now sounds like Buck 65, you're not listening to anything but hip-hop.

;P

This is another dope Kano track. The beats seem to fuse the best of America's current mainstream beatmakers (Dre, Kanye), while his lyrics and delivery contain a bit more honesty and vulnerability than his American counterparts. I'm really looking forward to hearing the album!

right on darwin! keepin' it real! your next assignment: travel down to jamaica and tell those people to quit pretending "dancehall" isn't just "rap with a silly sped-up reggae beat." should keep you busy for awhile!

in the meantime, i suggest you debate the "grime=rap" argument with the friendly folks at Dissensus, since they are known to care about such things. (looks like the board's down at this moment)

seriously... I don't know what Darwin is talking about, comparing this to Buck 65? Wha? The label "grime" might not stick, but that doesn't mean the music will disappear. I just said it was hip hop... someone else brought up grime.

Well I will agree that this particular track doesn't sound anything like what I've come to think of as "grime." Doesn't mean it's not a viable genre identifier, though. Just means Kano's spreading out a bit.
