Mitch Hedberg, potential lunch winner

*******************
Update: The Minneapolis Star Tribune has an article about St. Paul-born Hedberg, who reporter Colin Covert writes died of heart failure.
The New York Times has an obituary here, and Hedberg's hometown newspaper, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, has a short piece on him here.

I hope I'm not just perpetuating a false rumor, but word has it that comedian Mitch Hedberg died yesterday. There's also apparently a rumor out there that it was from a drug overdose, but that's completely unsubstantiated.
Mitch Hedberg was a great stand-up comedian whose deadpan, stoner observational humor was influenced by both Cheech & Chong and Steven Wright. I first saw him on Letterman and lost my mind; I think my favorite was a joke about how you get a receipt for everything these days, including donuts:

"I don't need a receipt for the donut, I give you money and you give me the donut, end of transaction. We don't need to bring ink and paper into this. I can't imagine a scenario that I would have to prove that I bought a donut. To some skeptical friend, 'Don't even act like I didn't buy a donut, I've got the documentation right here. It's in my file at home. Under D'."

I thought I'd post a track from his record Mitch All Together, and I had a hard time choosing, but this is what I settled on:

Mitch Hedberg - Three Easy Payments and Sandwiches

Listen for the dry cleaner joke.
Anyway, assuming the news is true, it's a sad day. Hedberg wasn't as influential or original as Bill Hicks or Richard Pryor, but I thought he was part of a great new group of comics including Patton Oswalt, Margaret Cho and David Cross - all refreshing voices to the big fat warhorse that is stand-up comedy.

You can - and should - buy Mitch All Together here.

I got a fire alarm at home, but really its more like a 9 volt battery slowly draining. If you want to get rid of your 9 volt batteries, buy this circle.

Sad day, one of the few recent comedians I find funny. RIP Mitch.

I saw him a month or two ago. Probably my favorite comedian ever, such perfect absurdist jokes, and that delivery...

"My apartment is infested with koala bears. It is the cutest infestation ever."

Jeez. Him and Bass Wolf... someone is killing off my funniest idols...

"In England Smoky the Bear is not the forest fire prevention representative. They have Smacky the Frog. It's just like a bear, but it's a frog. I think it's a better system, I think we should adopt it. Because bears can be mean, but frogs are always cool. Never has there been a frog hopping toward me, and I thought 'man, I'd better play dead. Here comes that frog...' You never say here comes that frog in a nervous manner. It's always optimistic. Hey here comes that frog, al-right. Maybe he'll come near me so I can pet him, and stick him in a mayonnaise jar, with a stick and a leaf, to recreate what he's used to. And I'm pretty sure I'd have to punch some holes in the lid, because he's damn sure used to air. Then I can observe him, and he won't be doing much in his 16 ounce world."

"I had a bag of Fritos. They were Texas grilled Fritos. These Fritos had grill marks on them. Hell yeah. Reminds me of summer time, when we used to fire up the barbeque and throw down some Fritos. I can still see my dad with the apron on. 'Better flip that Frito, Dad. You know how I like mine.'"

"I don't have a girlfriend, I just know a girl that would be really angry if she heard me say that."

"Last week I helped my friend stay put. It's a lot easier than helping someone move. I just went over to his house and made sure that he didn't start loading all his shit into a truck."

"..I noticed he had a nose-ring, a moustache, sunglasses, earrings, and a hat. So I told him 'hey man, you've got a lot of cranium accessories. See y'all are a smart crowd. When I play the dumb crowds I have to say 'you have a lot of shit on your head'. "

YOU'LL BE MISSED

You'll never see a sign that says "Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order". It could only say "Escalator Temporarily Stairs"

Mitch Hedberg was a genius and I have been a fan for 2 years. I bought all his CDs/DVDs BEFORE he died. The only comedian who made me pee on myself a little bit.

Peace and Love to Mary Hedberg and family from the boys from Project Dead.

"I think the people who make PRINGLES were originally suppossed to make tennis balls... but on the day the tennis balls were supposed to arrive they got a whole bunch of potatoes by mistake.... but the PRINGLES guys are cool so they just said "f*ck it, slice 'em up and put them in the can."

"I like re-fried beans, thats why I want to try fried beans, cause maybe they're just as good, and we're wastin time..."
Mitch was the real deal, no, re-frying involved. He was a beautiful person and I am blessed to have seen him live in January, 2005! We will miss you more than words can ever explain. Love you more than anything... Bless your family and friends... Thanks for the endless laughs that you have delivered!!!

I can't believe that two days after my birthday Mitch died. I was supposed to go to his show in Baltimore, what the week earlier, for my birthday but I decided not to get tickets. If only I knew it would be his last. I loved him. Forever and ever live Smackie the Frog!
