A tasty little Monday treat

gimme a beat
"Confection" by Mommy and Daddy

Well, I'm back from the warmer climes of Miami, first sunburned, now itchy and peeling... but sometimes that's the price you pay for lying around on the beach. c'est la vie. (thank you)

Mommy and Daddy are Edmond Hallas and Vivian Sarratt. They formed in 2002, though both had been working musicians for a number of years prior to this project. They share all the duties of the band: songwriting, singing, playing bass and synth/sampler. When they play live, they alternate duties, ie: she sings and pushes buttons, he plays bass and vice versa. I saw them play a year or two back at the infamous west-side nightspot, Don Hill's, at a show with the D - they seemed like really nice fun kids, and their live show was full of spastic nervous energy.

Up until a couple months back they'd released only a handful of records in the UK (despite being based in NYC), on Big Cat Records. However, their newest EP, titled Fighting Style Killer Panda, was released by the awesome Kanine records and is available direct from the label (or our friends at Insound) for a handy-dandy domestic price. Their second full-length album, Dual at Dawn, should be out in the next month or so - keep your sets tuned to MFR for more details there.

Also, check their shows page, as they're doing an extensive tour of the US and Canada.

I was going to mention that too. I like the track, but is sort of flat.

I totally think that the Pitchforkmedia review was overly harsh ... with a sound as unique as theirs, they should be given a lot of credit to begin with ...
And thank you music-for-robots ... when I checked Mommy and Daddy's website because you wrote about them, I discovered that they quoted me!

"I really enjoy how thtey use the tag-team style call-and-response thing in all of their songs, and how the seemingly obscure and dated form of singing always sounds incredibly fresh." bibabidi

I saw them opening for U.S.E. and thought it was a pretty good show, even though they were having a lot of equipment problems. "Confection" might be the best song on that EP.

Sounds great! Reminds me of this angry lesbian band from Arkansas named the Gossips. Same raw pissed off sound
