I Cried When At The Drive In Broke Up Too

Just Let Go
Fischerspooner - Just Let Go [thin white duke remix].

They should just get it out of the way and call this album The Great Electroclash Swindle. I don't know how Casey Spooner duped Capitol into signing them and then shelling out all kinds of cash on this new album. I mean, electroclash went the way of the dodo ages ago, right? I have no idea if there's a market for this, but good for the 'Spoon, and good for Capitol I guess.

Anyway, I went to the release party last night at cinespace. It was all hollywood craziness, cobra snake style. Which was fun. The DJ was Fashion Designer Jeremy Scott, which was interesting. He played the usual mix of madonna and beastie boys and peter piper and the rest of the amateur hour stuff. Which was fun. I don't remember hearing much of the album last night, but they did play this remix cut. The album itself is pure spooner -- pretentious, thin and over-thought. But whatever... it is what it is: a halfway decent Faint album.

I don't know if I recommend it or not. I mean, it's ok. After seeing the line down hollywood last night there are obviously fans of these guys (or maybe they're just fans of open bars and being seen?). What do you guys think? Do people still like the spoon? or the Fisch? Maybe. I'm curious.

Right. So, you can buy the album, Odyssey direct from the band for an astounding $18.99. It's the same price at insound, so I guess that's the price all around.

I loved "#1" when it came out, and the pretense of FS's live shows was fantastic, but I don't know if I'm ready for another album. SPIN called "Odyssey" a "rock opera fantasy," so I guess it's worth a listen. But at $18.99, Casey better be giving me a free handjob at the next show.

Or you could go here:

The 1st CD was very good, this one is very poor. As for electroclash, it was simply a term to encompass club DJs and producers who were willing to mash it up and play all sorts of dance-related music. Thankfully this is still happening, despite the media's self-appointed term (electroclash) having bitten the dust somewhat.

Sounds about right mark. What a pile of inspirationless crap this album is! And I can't believe I haven't read any bad reviews of it. CS obviously wins bullshitter of the century award, but I can't believe everyone falls for it!!!? I'm convinced no one pays attention to anything but the album's press release, and just regurgitates. I'm just a cloud? A concept album? What the fuck?

There's still plenty of DJs still mashing it up... ever heard of Dorkwave? www.dorkwave.com interetsing collective of guhs and gals....

and yeah, "electroclash" was a dumb media catchphrase (like IDM was in the late 90s *shudder*).

as for Fischerspooner, you gotta admit, the guy's got some brains for getting MoS and Capitol to sign his stuff. I haven't seen him live though.

I LOVE Fischerspooner, so I guess I am biased. I don't see anyone who likes music and has seen Fischerspooner live can say they don't like them. No body beats them live, except for maybe Bjork. OR the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They are tied, those three. And this album is great, play this at a party with your closest friends and everyone will be happy. This is not for listening to at your computer alone. This is music to drive fast to and drink hard to, basically have a good time to.

Oh, what a pain in the ass it must be to have to follow up an album that was the cutting edge at the forefront of the 'Electro-clash' "thing." Three years later, the scene has been littered with so many throw-away tracks, and all the ultra-cool hipsters have moved onto the newest 'next big thing' like they always do. #1 was a great album, and Emerge will go down in history as one of those rare, memorable tracks, as it should. As for the new album, I've only heard it through once, but I think its great. Groundbreaking? No... but they've already done that. It's fun, sexy, and danceable... and the video for 'Just Let Go' on the deluxe version is incredible. Give them the credit they deserve. If you want the newest cutting edge, get LCD Soundsystem... unless of course that is already passe as well. ;)

i don't know. odyssey is a good pop album. it's nothing more than that. spooner has an art background so he's good at bs'ing and making it more than it is. if you don't buy into that and just take it for face value then it's pretty good.

the songs on this album have a much tighter structure than on #1. that might be outside influences though. i think people are confusing "concept" with what an album should sound like.. cohesive and pulled together... with solid song structure. #1 wasn't that... it was good but it was messy and all over the place. this stands on it's own as an album. if you're comparing the two albums then you could fall into a "concept album" trap.

i'm glad he didn't try and cover any wire songs this time around.

the mirwais tracks are great... as far as production goes. and i really wish he would release another solo album instead of releasing crappy madonna tracks. or saving casey spooner's ass.

and for what it's worth i got my copy for $10...

I don't know about the album, but I'm a total sucker for Thin White Duke/Jacques LuCont remixes! That boy knows all about the build-up, pacing and drama....

i was actually pleasently surprised by the album. for me, it felt like casey spooner was doing his best britney spears impression. it's cheesey pop, at it's best.

Why is the title "I Cried When At The Driven Broke Up Too"? I know they whent away and left a decent band called Sparta, and a rock and roll phenom in The Mars Volta. And I even liked them so much I bought Rodriguez Lopez's solo album "Manual Dexterity" but what does that have to do with the electro-shit from Fisherspooner, of which both their albums recieved one of five stars from Blender. And their repetitive pop doesn't deserve space on your great website, than again it is your website

You've probably all heard of the great electroclash swindle that Fischerspooner pulled off in London during 2002 right? They managed to get a one million pound signing for #1 from Ministry of Sound records and ofcourse the album fell completely on it's arse and dragged the MOS label and almost the club down with it. Funnily enough, the scene here in London i still strong although it's fused now with a punk/post-punk scene particularly in the Shoreditch area. I don't fancy the new album - I think it's dull and uninspired and certainly not edgy. I smell another swindle! :)

yeah, i sort of agree with you: fischerspooner/their cinespace party, are/were overrated.

Posted by: kathy at April 7, 2005 1:34 PM

The title of the post is terribly misleading. You had my hopes up for something ATDI related. What a let-down: expecting something reminiscent of ATDI and I get fischerspooner...

Thanks Matt, you are the only person here that has responded to my early message.

Posted by: Sky at April 8, 2005 2:34 AM

Oy ... I don't like the album at all. Sorry ...
what I think ...

Posted by: Nik at April 8, 2005 10:16 AM

Sorry about the ATDI confusion -- it's a personal joke regarding something that happened at the party. Only funny to about two people.

oh well.

Posted by: robot mark at April 8, 2005 11:15 AM

Shit, someone didn't deliver the message, I guess. It's cool to like Fischerspooner again, cause all the people who will trash them cause they think they're supposed to, will expose themselves as the drones they are. The indie elite switch it up again. Word!
