I Can Always Hide From This Town

Letting Up
Letting Up Despite Great Faults - If You Were Here Today.

Listen. Every day I sift through the e-mail that we robots get, and every day I'm dumbfounded by the bands that mail us. Not that it's all bad (although a good deal of it is), but because it's got nothing to do with our site. It doens't fit in. But after digging through all the crap, I was psyched to stumble across Letting Up. Finally, some real unsigned talent that I can get behind, and want to work with. This music represents everything we robots are about.

There are very few lyrics in this song, and they're sung very quietly, but they come at exactly the right time with exactly the right inflection and volume to make them hit hardest. The pacing of the song is just about perfect. I wouldn't change a thing.

Even though the artist has been making music for less than a year under the Letting Up name, he's already attracted plenty of critical attention as well as online radio play. And this is on the strength of only two songs. So I'll also admit that I'm party to the hype because they're two really excellent songs. Filled with subtlety and tension, an expertly plucked acoustic and well-timed breakdowns, this track has just about everything you need on a day like today.

Mike's now brought on some string players for his live shows, but is having difficulty booking sets in the LA/OC area. So if anyone out there wants to help out, feel free to get in touch so we can make it happen. I'd love to see them with the strings. I bet it's incredible. There is no album as of yet, but there are a couple more songs on his myspace page.

Has a nice Pinback quality to it that I'm enjoying. The sense of secret anticipation, of something hanging just out of view. Nice track!
