I Swear I Heard Her Call

Some CitiesDoves - Sky Starts Falling

This sentiment has been voiced thousands of times before. "If you see her again, be sure to say hello. Be sure to send my love." I mean, this is not necessarily anything new. But when the post-chorus wall of guitar hits, it says so much more than their tired words ever could. That sour, shaking, sickness of a sound perfectly personifies the emotions one feels in a situation like this. It just twists in knots, at one moment beautiful and the next depressing and banal. I think this is probably the best thing I've ever heard out of Doves, and I would love to see them pull it off live.

Plus, I love the production on this thing. It sounds like it's fresh off an old cassette tape or something -- all fuzzed out and slightly muffled. It's warm and loud and fantastic. Normally you wouldn't see us robots riding the nuts of some major label kids like this, but whatever? I just find it interesting to hear a somewhat fresh takes on old news, ya know? So anyway, I highly recommend this song.

The album it comes from is pretty darn good too. It's a shame they had to cancel all those tour dates. I would've loved to have seem them. Maybe next time I'll catch them. You can pick up the album Some Cities from our friends at Insound or iTunes.

I always get this album mixed up with the Dears - No Cities Left.

Hmm, it's certainly interesting.
It sounds like something from their slightly ho-hum second album, though.
I assume you've heard their first one?
If not, it's worth seeking out. It had a rather drony asthetic which doesn't seem to have been replicated since.

As for them live - I've seen them twice in London, and they weren't that interesting. Maybe they've tightened up. Let's hope so!

One of the standout tracks on this one, for sure. I'm pretty partial to Black and White Town, too. Love that piano line. And those little space noises at the end.

If you're digging back into the earlier stuff, I'd say grab Last Broadcast before Lost Souls. Either way, Some Cities is their best and biggest step forward.

nicely said, esp talking about how the wall of sound really says the most. why is this not the single?
